From wu4g at comcast.net Sun Jan 6 20:31:45 2019 From: wu4g at comcast.net (Ronnie Bolton) Date: Sun, 6 Jan 2019 20:31:45 -0500 Subject: [CVCC] WU4G - ARRL RTTY Roundup Message-ID: <004b01d4a628$c0deda40$429c8ec0$@comcast.net> My first ever RTTY contest! Now that I have a very RTTY friendly radio, I decided to give this a try and now I'm hooked. Yes Bruce, you told me this a long time ago but I just never seemed to figure it all out. With a very part time effort I ended up with 191 Q's, 46 sections, 13 countries for 10,974 points. I made 192 Qs but had to delete one as it was an FT8 that had an incorrect exchange. IMHO FT8 was not a good fit in this contest for me. Running MMTTY, N1MM controls the radio but with FT8, WSJT-X wants to control the radio, so in order to switch to FT8, I had to change the settings in N1MM to quit talking to the radio, shut N1MM down, start WSJT-X and then start N1MM again. Switching back to RTTY I had to do the same thing all over again; too much trouble in my opinion. The second time I did it, N1MM didn't want to bring up it's RTTY window to see the decode. After checking settings, saving them over and over again, and reopening N1MM, after about 6 restarts it finally showed up. I probably spent almost 10 minutes messing with it. After that I never went back to FT8. The second issue I had with FT8 was that it appeared that many of those using it were not in the contest; that's the reason for my removal of a contact with a PY. It was difficult to accurately determine who wasn't in the contest. Some used CQ RU but very few did. Lastly, I found RTTY more enjoyable because if you wanted to say something else to someone, you could, just like in a phone or cw contest. FT8 is so cold. I plan to send a note to our ARRL contest committee rep giving my opinion of this FT8 trial in this contest. I don't see where it hurt the contest any, but I felt it was more trouble that it was worth and would not use it again in this one unless some changes are made to improve the experience. Other scores? Don't forget to submit as Central Virginia Contest Club! 73 Ronnie WU4G From kg4w at comcast.net Sun Jan 6 21:47:56 2019 From: kg4w at comcast.net (Ed Hughes) Date: Sun, 6 Jan 2019 21:47:56 -0500 Subject: [CVCC] KG4W ARRL RTTY ROUNDUP Message-ID: <73739600-f1c7-66b2-eca5-4791a10aa5df@comcast.net> Used mode FT8 for the contest. 262 qsos 49 sections 30 countries 20,698 points Ed KG4W From n3ua at msn.com Sun Jan 6 23:14:31 2019 From: n3ua at msn.com (_ N3UA) Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2019 04:14:31 +0000 Subject: [CVCC] ARRL RTTY Roundup In-Reply-To: <004b01d4a628$c0deda40$429c8ec0$@comcast.net> References: <004b01d4a628$c0deda40$429c8ec0$@comcast.net> Message-ID: 100 QSO 22 SEC 24 DXC 4600 Pts 73 de N3UA From wd4mfe at gmail.com Mon Jan 7 06:59:26 2019 From: wd4mfe at gmail.com (Mel Manning) Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2019 06:59:26 -0500 Subject: [CVCC] KG4W ARRL RTTY ROUNDUP In-Reply-To: <73739600-f1c7-66b2-eca5-4791a10aa5df@comcast.net> References: <73739600-f1c7-66b2-eca5-4791a10aa5df@comcast.net> Message-ID: WB3D Report Here Are my numbers from the RTTY TU this weekend. I advised him to send any proceeds to Milt with checks payable to CVCC. Dave did a lot of work cleaning the yellow nicotine residue off the items as much as was possible. Needless to say most of the items are not in pristine condition. Hopefully the functional items will bring reasonable prices. He is off to FL and will attend 5 or 6 ham fests there during his stay. I have a few small items here which I will take to Frost Fest and try to sell there. There were many times during the contest when I said "I wish I had not changed my name to DUDE". Many requests for repeats. I too had many long pauses waiting for OM to confirm my report. He was fumbling (if he types as badly as I do) trying to change my (pre-posted) name of ED to DUDE. I made a change which helped with their copying of DUDE ie- if you place a tilde ~ between the letters, N1MM+ places a pause between the letters ie D~U~D~E. Of course, everybody will now have my name preposted as DUDE ! Amazing the (apparent) typing speed of some of these ops, Many OMs were cqing at at 40wpm, and the instant I sent DUDE VA, they would send "TU CQ". I woke up this morning and tried to explain to my wife the humor involved in my contact with you during the NAQP. It was 10:55PM and I was tired - I was still copying code, but evidently my ability for critical thinking was gone. You sent N3UA and then D U D E V A. I convinced myself that you were telling me "this is" VA and not UA. I changed your call to N3VA and then started asking for your name and state ..and back and forth we went! Every time you sent D U D E V A, I wanted to say "dude, I get it...what is your name and state?" I hope you see the humor... sorry for being a lid. And I did figure it out and update my log appropriately. ...especially after realizing I worked 4 "Dude's" during the contest. Since we suddenly have a lot of funds donated to us in MYA's memory, I was wondering if there might be any interest in making a contribution to this effort? The effort will be completely operated and planned by people under 21. We are calling ourselves Team Exuberance.
