I barely got the 4 sq up and running only one day prior to the contest and never even tested it on the other than making SWR measurements.   CU all Tuesday. Due to technical difficulties, W4HZ was not on last night.  After considerable efforts by Jon and Dennis to solve the issues, I returned home and made a few contacts.  I heard both Sejo and Ronnie.  Don?t know if we can overcome the lost productivity of last night but, let?s hope HZ is back up tonight.  I?ll be giving it the ole college try from OSO.

My small contribution to the effort:

 

25,935 points on 220 QSOs and 57 mults.  I experienced better conditions
last night vs Friday night.  Was able to hear and work 5-land stations,
northwest coast and a contact into EU.

 

Great job Puck and Sejo!  And a big thanks to Bob in getting a huge amount
of repairs complete just in time, and offering his station!

All in all, a great tribute to our friend and contesting mentor - W4MYA was
heard again!!!! Way to run 'em dudes!

 

Jonathan and Dennis - thanks for your hard work and diligence in attempting
to resolve the technical issues with getting W4HZ on the air.  I know that
was a very frustrating thing to deal with.  Don't fret it. MYA would have
just said, stuff happens (more or less) and I'll catch the next one.

ARRL 160 is always a low key effort for our 160 team...it's our shake-down
cruise after re-installing the two ele TX antenna on the FM broadcast tower out
in the salt marsh. Being the weekend after CQWW CW poses some staffing
challenges.

Discovered some issues with corrosion in the 7/8 inch hardline connectors, most
likely the result of feed lines being under salt water during Hurricane Sandy
two years ago. After some spraying and scraping it was straightened out.

We added a new low dipole RX antenna. This seemed to help overall, especially
during daylight operation (why doesn't the ARRL implement a M/S time limit like
the CQ160 event....so this meaningless daytime operation can be eliminated).

Conditions to EU were marginal the first night with heavy QSB but somewhat
better night two. Propagation to W6/W7 was better than most years. Worked two
VKs but no KL7, ZL or VK heard at this QTH.

Last night we attended a concert by the Texas Tenors, Marcus, J.C. and John.  It was outstanding.  If you ever get the chance to see these guys in concert jump at the chance.  America's Got Talent, a TV show,  will do a special season starting this coming January with 50 champions from previous worldwide editions of the "Got Talent" shows.  The Texas Tenors are one of the 50 acts selected to appear.  It was filmed earlier but the guys will not reveal how it went!


Cathy, my daughter, has a special relationship with these guys, from the days when she used to perform on Cruise Ships.  The night before the concert Marcus and J.C. stopped by her house, had dinner with her and her family, and invited her to perform with them for one song during their concert.    


Last night she did just that.  For me that was the icing on the cake to hear her perform with the guys.  After the show they let it be known that they have had a number of friends perform with them in concerts before  but NO one was even close to Cathy's talent!   Maybe she could do an opening act for them sometimes when they perform in Branson, MO at the Andy Williams theater.

FYI, I copied this from "tower talk". Being an om who hates installing 
PL259s, looks good to me.

A few weeks ago, Ian, GM3SEK suggested looking into a clamp-type UHF/PL-259

connector (not crimp) that offered easy assembly and a weather-resistant
backing for outdoor installations.  The only soldering required is for the
inner conductor.

I ordered a dozen connectors through Newark Electronics and the shipment
arrived today.  I had a RG-214 jumper that needed shortening so I tried the
new connectors this morning.

These connectors are specific to the larger RG-213/214 and LMR400 class of
cables.  However Multicomp offers a smaller clamp-style connector for RG-58.

I sent out an email recently which talked about a "clamp-on" type of 
PL259. A short while later, Dennis N4DEN pointed out that this connector 
was no longer available :-(
There's lots of discussion taking place on the Topband reflector 
regarding the infamous PL259. The information below, talks about a new 
(to me) way of soldering on this connector. The owner of Dx Engineering 
K3LR uses this method in his world class contest station.

About five years AGO, I discovered this fool-proof and brilliant way to 
solder PL-259s invented by Bill Maxon N4AR who taught this to Tim K3LR. 
Tim uses this method throughout his contest station and did a great job 
of documenting it ? see http://www.k3lr.com/engineering/pl259/ and this 
YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfI_fanRCq4 it has totally 
changed my angry and worried attitude towards soldering PL-259s.

The key component is Amphenol 83-1SP connectors. The connector body is silver and the shell is nickel and you can buy them from Mouser or DX Engineering.

I've seen these before but didn't know how they were done on the inside.  Think I shall go this way from now on.  Only other comment I have is to lose the soldering gun. Too small of tip for good, quick transfer of heat.  Can't tell you how many times I have melted the dielectric in one area trying to get the entire connector hot enough for the solder to flow.  Get what Don K4ZA, the tower guy, suggests - a Weller SP120 iron that has the big, heavy duty tip.  Lower wattage than the gun but much quicker transfer of the heat to a larger area. I sent out an email recently which talked about a "clamp-on" type of PL259. A short while later, Dennis N4DEN pointed out that this connector was no longer available :-( There's lots of discussion taking place on the Topband reflector regarding the infamous PL259. The information below, talks about a new (to me) way of soldering on this connector. The owner of Dx Engineering K3LR uses this method in his world class contest station.

About five years AGO, I discovered this fool-proof and brilliant way to solder PL-259s invented by Bill Maxon N4AR who taught this to Tim K3LR.

The key component is Amphenol 83-1SP connectors. The connector body is silver and the shell is nickel and you can buy them from Mouser or DX Engineering.

Didn't get to play much Saturday; had one thing after another require my
attention.  The impending snowstorm also had me getting some things ready in
preparation as well.  Funny thing is I still made more contacts on Saturday
(16) than Sunday (15) even though the storm kept me at the radio all day
Sunday!  I had the radio in scan mode most of the day, interspersed with
calling CQ.  Had 2 responses to CQs on Saturday, 0 on Sunday.  Worked only
DX Sunday - 2 CX stations.  Heard LX3S make two contacts and then he faded
out before I was able to get through.  So interesting that 10 gave us some
propagation all the way to SA but barely made it west to the Mississippi. KS
was my most western contact. 

 

100W into a Carolina Windom.  Sejo you were correct in saying that the wire
would beat the 5/8 vertical I built.  Never used it for a contact.

First the 160M: 

The recent ARRL 160-Meter Contest <http://www.arrl.org/160-meter>  was
negatively influenced by a major storm weather system in the middle of the
US. Some participants noted that noise levels were elevated, masking any
signals that might be present, and reducing their ability to work distant
multipliers.

On Sunday as the snow fell I was working that "FL QSO PARTY" when the band opened to New England and I got all of the W1 multipliers in just a few minutes!? There were other times when W8, W9 and W0 stations were all that could be worked.
The best opening was Saturday afternoon when ZL and VK called me followed by a KH6 and a multitude of W6 and W7 stations.? Last but not least was the TX, LA, MS run.
10 meters is interesting these days with its selective openings.? Many would go unnoticed if not for lots of high power , yagi equipted stations opening up the band!
As for 160 there was QRN but I was surprised at how many EU stations called with very readable and easily workable signals.
Operating at stations with high power and real antennas is great fun!

Apparently some felt conditions were better this year than last!  And this
guy was running 5 watts!!

prefer not to meet that evening.  Let's schedule to meet on Jan 8th, the
second Tuesday at Vinny's at 7 pm.

On tap is to see if there any plans for the ARRL DX contests in Feb and Mar.


 

The ARRL RTTY Roundup is Jan 5 & 6.  Bruce tried his best to get us
interested in this contest.  Now that a number of us now have digital
capabilities, maybe the time is ripe?  The ARRL is allowing FT8 in the
contest for the first time so maybe that will attract some new players.
I've been industriously working to get logging programs, RTTY, FT8 and the
other digital modes working with my new IC-7300.  This radio continues to
amaze me what can be done with just 1 USB cable.  I hope to give it a whirl
in the Roundup.   I saw that MYA turned in a nice score in the previous
Roundup.  Is there any interest in keeping his honor up?

I will play in the ARRL RTTY Roundup using mode FT8 via the WSJT-X program.
One problem with using strictly WSJT-X is that it is not capable of
tracking which multipliers have been worked & those that are needed. I 
am sure
they will eventually include this feature along with others.

It is possible to "link" WSJT-X with the N1MM+ contest program for the
purpose of having N1MM track multipliers and keep a log, in addition
to the log kept by WSJT-X. I have just been playing around with this
link-up of the 2 programs, and after making a few test qsos, it looks good.

Hi all,

I received an email from the ARRL showing our contest entries and due to an
error on my part, KG4W's score was disallowed as he was not included in the
last eligibility list that I submitted prior to the contests.   I went back
a looked at my spreadsheet and saw that it had not filtered the callsigns
properly and left out Ed's call.  I failed to notice that it included a
different call of someone no longer active instead an so the list length did
not change and so I missed the change.  I sincerely apologize to all and
especially Ed.  From what they sent, it appears that we still have the top
score for local club as long as the scores hold up.   

However, the same list was used for the 10M contest as we had no changes so
the last one I uploaded was used for both.  So again, Ed's entry will be
disallowed.  I expect the same report on the 10M contest in the next week or
so and we'll see how that affects us. 

 

I just uploaded a fresh list for the ARRL RTTY Roundup next week.  Here is
what I submitted.  If anyone sees an error or someone missing, please let me
