[CVCC] CVCC ARRL 160 - 2013

Finally got power/internet back. Had the generator running last night and
today but that didn't help Comcast any.
Friday night here was in the dumps. So much so, I just quit for a couple of
hours and went in and sat with Debbie to watch TV with her. Couldn't stay
up late as I had to get up early. I think it was the rain and higher noise
levels because of it. Couldn't hear squat. The usual pipeline into MN
wasn't there - 3 Qs I think. Almost no DX and no west coast. Way down on
both Q's (~150) and Mults (~45) Friday. Saturday, after I got home from a
local mission project, I decided to try out a ~700 ft beverage on the ground
this time as I didn't have enough daylight left to do otherwise. Finished
putting it together and laying it more or less down (to darn many briars in
the woods!) just about dusk. Found things much better Saturday evening, but
not like I remember last year. Quite a few DX stations just couldn't hear
me this time, though I was able to bust mini-pileups on the good mults in
the US with ease, so was kinda mixed. Didn't expect to exceed my
multiplier total from last year since I had such a poor start, but things
started to fall together late into the night, so I stuck with it until 2:30
am. I made one dupe, my fault; was tired and just copied the call wrong.
Felt I more or less wasted my time on the BOG. I think I had one station
that I could copy on it, that I couldn't on the inv-v all the rest were the
other way around. If it was border line copy, the inv-v was the one that
allowed me to make the contact as far as receiving. Above the ground, on
the ground, whatever, I have never had any success with a beverage here.
Fighting one through the brush, briars and muck in my woods is good exercise
though! Worthless for operating from my experience here.
QSO's Mults Score
341 73 51757
All S&P.

MYA sez :From my perspective it was tuff going with no 160 antenna and no
beverages.
Tried 80M dipole thru tuner, but it was poor, different configurations and
the best
match found, without the tuner, was using the two loops configured as shown
in the picture, strange indeed. Puck's NOTE: The picture shows a "Rube
Goldberg" lash-up. Bob can do amazing things with most any sort of antenna.
Operating skill trumps hardware most everytime!
W4DR sez: Bad conditions especially for DX. Very little Europe this year.
N4DJ sez:I had my best start ever in a ARRL 160 test, averaging better than
60 per hour for over 4 hours. Just could not get enough time in the chair.
Total time was only 13 hours.
W4PM sez: Mult's were down a bit but QSO total was up and our score was UP
from last year! Jonathan's reworked 4 square RX array worked
great! It was like a beam - switch one way and you hear the west coast, the
other way and you hear Europe! We had 95 five point contacts and a few good
EU runs but not enough different countries. Lots of G's, DL's, F's, S5's
and I's.
