YES, That's the story I remember now that you have provided the details.  Do you remember Ed's call.  Wasn't it a W7 call?  What a character he was.  He lived not far from me and used to come back to my CQ on 40 with some wierd DX call like RG8U or B4UP running some sort of unstable oscillator.
