STOP THE PRESSES!

It seems sending the newsletter earlier than usual has caused some oversights.

First, congratulations are in order for W4HZ, Jonathan, on his PVRC 10mm Point Award! It takes alot of dedication to contesting over the years to achieve this award.

Secondly, The ARRL has announced that our very own W4DR, has won the Desoto Cup for an unprecedented 6th straight year. The Desoto Cup is given to the DXer with the most countries on 6 through 160 meters combined. Bob has an amazing 3095 Band Countries. Congratulations, Bob!

CVCC,

Here is the Feb. Newsletter. A little early this week. Check the Club Webpage for the full edition. Enjoy!

Prez Sez:

February is the month for one of the biggest contests of the year. Mark your calendars for the 18-19 to get on the air in the ARRL DX CW Contest. This event is always a lot of fun with plenty of Dxcitement! Plan to spend at least a few hours operating and rack up some points for the Club.

Congratulations to Sejo, N3UA, for his inspiring win of the 2005 CVCC DX Champion Award! I suspect that his 920 new band entities is an all time Club record. Way to go Sejo! I would also like to congratulate Ralph, W4FEG, on his PVRC 5mm Point Award. Great accomplishment Ralph!

This month's Club meeting presentation will be a Show and Tell Nite. I mistakenly scheduled this event for January when I forgot about Sejo's presentation on T9. Thanks to Sejo for a great job and informative session. If everyone could come prepared this month to share a new toy, or gadget, or discuss a recent radio conquest, that would be great!

Please be thinking about your participation in one of the Club Officer positions. Nominations are taken at the March meeting for President, Secretary, and Treasurer, with voting and installation at the April meeting. Get involved and help make the Club a better organization! Feel free to contact any of the current officers to discuss roles and responsibilities.

As always, keep an eye on the Club Webpage. Kyle, WA4PGM, posts regular updates and does a fantastic job maintaining the site. I think it's one of the better Ham Radio Club websites out there.

See you all at the meeting Feb. 14

Vy 73,

Ed, NW4V

 DX de DR

I begin this column on a sad note. On January 21 W1FH became a silent key. I remember spending a delightful afternoon with Charlie in February of 1961 when I was in Boston attending the International Association of Dental Research. He was the first operator to get both a mixed and phone only DXCC postwar and he stayed at the top of the Honor Roll until he retired from active DX'ing around 1967. Charlie's schedules with AC4YN in Lhasa, Tibet was the secret source of Lowell Thomas' NBC news reports on the Chinese invasion of Tibet. RIP Charlie!

UPCOMING:

3Y0X: This one is probably already on the air by the time you read this. Be sure to work it everywhere you need it as it will be a long time before the next operation. The last activity from Peter I was in 1994

TY: March 15-20 all bands and modes especially digital by K2LEO and GM4FDM

FR/G: Originally scheduled for March 17 to April 7 still having trouble arranging with the French Military and may now be postponed until late May. Keep you fingers crossed. This is my personal 3rd most needed DXCC entity behind BS7 and P5.

FT5WL: Watch for a short operation by TU5KG from Crozet if you need this one

MEMBER REPORTS:

NW4V: Ed had a great January with 9 new BE's; D2 on 30, 4J5A on 80, a DU on 20, CE0Z 30, 40 & 17, 6O0N on 80 and PY0S 30 & 40 cw. Keep up the good work!

W4HJ: AC has his A4S beam repaired and working again and looks forward to more 20 meter action. He was in the 160 contest and picked up three new ones (YO, GU, F) to reach 81 on topband. YV was a new one on 40 PSK

WK4Y: January netted Roy 4 new BE's (band entities) HB0 and GI on 160 to give him 97 on that band and the CE0Z boys on 15 and 17 cw

W1ZA: Duke has his 2 element 40 meter beam at 100 feet and is ready for some action if he can get Bill Bowen and Virginia Dominion Power to quiet a huge power leak near his house. The 20 meter beam awaits a crane and the multiband LP a ring rotor to complete this neat installation.

W4DR: My only new one in January was YS1CF on 60 meters, but I was very happy to receive my HL3IUA 160 meter qsl and a 9N7JO 80 meter qsl. 160 has produced some interesting DX this past month. HS, 9N7, EZ and JT were all active in the 160 CQ CW contest, but not workable in NA. All 4 of those would be new for me and most NA topbanders. I did manage some neat, but not new DX on 160 though; A45XR, SU9HP, 6O0N, 3V8DLH, 4J5A and FO/HA9G plus a bunch of JA's

DX TOTALS:

This program featured on our web site records the multiband progress of our DX'ers. I think multiband DX'ing is a wonderful way to challenge the newcomer as well as the seasoned DX'er to stay interested in the game and to sharpen operating skills and encourage station upgrades. There is always something just out of reach to try for whether you have been chasing DX 5 months or 50 years. Here are the results for our 2005 DX Champion Award program

     1. N3UA 920 new band entities 27.5 % of needed total

     2. NW4V 120 " " " 7.1 % " " "

     9. WA4PGM 5 " " " .1 % " " "

    10. W4TNX 1 " " " .1 % " " "

The plaques, which are sponsored this year by W1ZA and W4HZ will be awarded at the March meeting. In addition to the ten stations who were elgible for the competition in 2005 and also in 2006 six additional stations have current scores submitted making them eligible for the awards in 2006. They are WD4LBR, K4WNW, W4PM, W1ZA, W4HZ and W4HJ. Where is KI4DX??

IRC, IRC, IRC:

I have over 80 current issue valid IRC's which I will sell to club members at $1 each. These same IRC's will cost $1.75 at the post office. One IRC will prepay return postage from most countries whereas it now takes $3 for return postage from Germany for example. If these are not sold shortly I will cash them in at the local PO which is a waste. I will also accept mail orders for the coupons if a SASE is included with the order.

*(That's Tango November X-ray for you, BobLadd)

Kat and I broke ground on Jan. 17, 2006 for our new QTH. A little bit ahead of schedule, but before many permits have been approved and, oh yeah..., the construction loan thing is still out there! The driveway to the new QTH (or the start of it) is complete in my mind (about 200 feet of crushed stone that Kathy would like to become asphalt or concrete)! On Jan. 16, while tagging trees to be cleared, we "jumped" a 10 point (my guess, as he was running fast, but did have a good size "rack") buck deer sleeping on the wooded side of my 10 acres. He still had his antlers this late in the season and my builder and his son were impressed, as they had been hunting before the season ended and saw nothing anywhere near this area! The clearing and grubbing crew saw two does come across my meadow one day about a week later and saw four does the day they took their 'dozer and crane off the site. I guess my garden and shrubs will have dinner guests until I get a little bit more developed.

W4TNX, John
