CVCC,

Please enjoy the November 599 VA Newsletter. The full copy, with graphics, will be posted to the Club website. Please submit any articles to John, W4TNX, on or before the Friday preceding the Club Meeting.

PrezSez:

Our November Club Meeting is shaping up to be a real treat! Thanks to Bruce and Sheila, we have a special guest speaker. Mr. Dwight McAtee, KF4DUE, of K-9 Alert Search and Rescue Dogs, will be discussing his organization and the role amateur radio plays. Please plan to attend November 8 at 7PM, and be a part of this very interesting presentation! We will also be voting on the nominated slate of PVRC Officers and Trustees at our November meeting.

It was great to see quite a few members out at Bob's, W4MYA, for CQ WW SSB. In particular, Roy, and Bob did yeoman's duty working the bands at all hours with very little sleep. I think it's safe to say that a good time was had by all! A special thanks to Bob and Lily for hosting the group.

If you have not made plans to participate in this years Sweepstakes event, please do so as soon as possible. PVRC has openly stated a goal of winning the Club category. This will take an effort on everyone's part to submit a score, no matter how small. We can win through our sheer number of members. However, you have to submit a score! The CW portion is Nov. 5-7. The Phone portion is Nov. 19-21. Contact myself or one of the Club officers for more details on how to participate.

As most of you know, Bob, W4DR, underwent emergency appendectomy surgery on October 11th. He is now on his way to a full recovery and would like to thank everyone for their cards, calls, and concern.

Mark your calendars to attend our annual Christmas Dinner, December 5th at Topeka's Steakhouse 1776 N. Parham Rd. Richmond. Festivities get underway at 6:30PM. Please RSVP to Dennis, rdpinneratcomcast.net, prior to Dec. 1.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our meeting and working you in Sweepstakes!

Ed, NW4V

DX de DR:

Just after my last column was written I heard from NW4V. It seems our president had a great summer. He added to his DXCC totals with XW, XU, YK, FT5X, K7C and SV2ASP/A. The latter on 40 CW! New Band/Entities included V5, C21 & FO on 80, 4U1UN 30, and KH9 on 17.

For me fall was definitely an up and down time. October started nicely with a visit to W1ZA's beautiful home. Nine days later I was on the operating table having my appendix removed. I started back to work on October 20, but had to go back to the hospital two days later with what was finally diagnosed as pneumonia. Finally on November 1 I was permitted to return to work. Several good things did happen. After 38 years I was able to find VS9ARV alive and well in England and confirm the Peoples Democratic Republic of Yemen (a deleted country) on 15 meters. In order to pull this off I had to use K8LX's Hamgallery web site and QRZ's search by name feature. This qsl, if accepted by the DXCC desk, will tie me for first place on 15 meters with DJ2BW. If I could match a present call sign with the name Maurel Louis, ex-FF8AP I might even claim first place but that qso was 50 years ago.

The CQ WW phone contest was a fun time even though on doctor's orders I had to limit my time on the band. It was good to see new operators and some old faces return to MYA's MM operation. I had intended to be there myself. Ralph was really knocking em off on 160 which was the band I spent most of my limited time on. He had 54 countries on topband. How did you find ZD8Z, Ralph? My best catch was J49Z on Crete. W4HJ was also working 160 and he worked 23 counties up there. I stayed up past my bed time Friday night just to look for Sejo who was T93C. Finally at 03:22 I saw a spot for him and we had a mini rag chew on 75. He had a great signal so that slot antenna was doing its job. I went to bed early Saturday night so I could try for some Pacific zones/countries at sunrise Sunday, but 160 yielded nothing to the west so noticing a spot for BV0J on 40 ssb I went down there and worked him on one call. That was my 340th country on 40 phone so it was a real thrill. I missed a spot for B1Z which would have been new also, but found the long path to Asia on 40 phone the best I have heard in years. In quick order I worked VR2MX, UK9AA, EY8MM, UA9AYA and RU9CK.

Sheila, K4WNW says she is finally feeling well enough to set down in front of her radio and had worked one new one along with 10 new band/countries. I expect a full report of her activities next month.

Finally there is news on Glorioso. Their web site now projects activity late March, early April, which is after their storm season. Peter I is still on for early 2006 and although officially unannounced my friend Jon Rudy will operate as 4W3ZZ from E Timor between Nov 24 and December 4. He calls it a "microlite" dxpedition as it will be a FT100 and a wire antenna. He promises a big effort to give me that much needed one on 80, but it will take a "macromiracle" for that to happen. I need to borrow K4JA's 9 circle 80 meter array for a week. Too bad it's gone! Oh well maybe my 4 square will get me one or two more new ones on 80.

During my forced vacation I did find 12 meters quite good on several days, but for the most part it will be several years before 10 and 12 produce much. It is interesting to see the big MM's now reporting 160 totals higher than their 10 meter totals.

 Bob W4DR

Welcome to Contest Year 2005-2006 !

We have already drawn first blood in the 2005-2006 contest season, with CQWW SSB behind us. Bob's (W4MYA) station is in the top 10 as I write this (in a dead heat for # 8 & #9), based on internet score postings. Conditions were OK for the bottom of the cycle, but the bands were wall to wall and run frequencies were hard to come by and hold. Also, the rarer stations were no match for the stronger running M/M stations in Europe. It was nice to note that there was quite a bit of activity on all bands, although 10M was understandably lower than we would have liked. I think we only logged a few 10M Europe calls (like CT and EA).

The PVRC is making a big push for us to be active in the ARRL Sweepstakes Contests that start this weekend (11/5/2005). This is the CW contest weekend. The SSB Contest will be the weekend of 11/19/2005. Get on and throw in some scores for CVCC / PVRC if you can. Remember, with a fixed number of multipliers and mostly "USA" activity, a small station can be competitive with the "big guns" and this is a good opportunity to build on your PVRC 5 Million totals.

Top Scores for CQWW SSB M/M 2005 from the 3830 Archives as of 11/5/2005:

K3LR 17,534,454

KC1XX 15,700,000

K1TT 10,697,078

NQ4I 9,600,000
K1RX 7,586,000

N3AD 7,365,384

W3PP 6,415,101

W4MYA 5,348,064

K5NA 4,862,220

Let's hope that the KB1H Ops had more "fat fingers" than we did, as the difference in the "raw score" is probably about 1 QSO!
