Subject: Radio Haiti

Bob,

My husband and I are visiting here from Haiti. I did a search on radios and

found your named linked to Powhatan. I am originally from Powhatan. We are

trying to get information on radio communication. We are trying to find a

means of communicating between the Capital city of Port-au-Prince and the

very remote central plateau area of Haiti. There is no electric in this area

for at least 14 miles, no roads, etc. We are trying to conduct a school

there and communicate with pastors from several churches in that area. We

can only get one cell phone signal in one spot, the plateau is surrounded by

mountains, but I think it would be better for us to have a stable radio

base. The cell phone is somewhat difficult to maintain because the people

have far to travel to purchase the prepaid cards to operate the phone (by

donkey), poor generator performance to charge the phones, the availability

of gasoline or diesel to run a generator, etc. What we need is to talk to

someone who knows radios and let us know if it is a feasible alternative. We

heard of one gentleman who works remote areas and uses some sort of antenna

and radio where he can call cell phone numbers in the city of port au

prince. My husband found a place where he can purchase the frequency license

in Haiti but we are really dummies when it comes to the radio. They told him

you couldn't purchase the radio in Haiti. I guess we need to know what the

radio is, how it works etc. If you could help us in anyway or direct us to

someone who can please call or write.

Thank You

Margaret Joseph
