Update on Krassy, K1LZ (CY9SS Expedition)
Krassy, K1LZ, was on a 48' tower, strapped to the top, when one of the guy
ropes broke. The tower and he fell to the ground with the tower landing on
his left leg/hip breaking the femur into 4 pieces. Fortunately, the tower
fell toward the island and not the sea, causing him to land in a soft area
of grass.
Krassy has had a cat scan and has no internal injuries.
Krassy had surgery on his left leg (upper femur) last night (June 11),
around 7:30PM. The surgery took over two hours. The surgery went well and
the doctor, whom is a specialist with these types of injuries, said the four
broken pieces of his femur came together nicely with the compression screws
and plates. He put one long plate in his leg along the length of the bone
along with several smaller plates and screws.

He is suffering with some other pain in his right ankle and he is
complaining of pain in two places in his ribs. Although the cat scan and
x-rays came back negative, the doctor thinks it is likely that he has two
cracked ribs, one on each side. Krassy says there is a clicking (klink klink
as he describes) from one rib when it is pressed with the fingers.

Considering the pain Krassy is in, he is in good spirits. He jokes around a
bit when he is not drowsy from the morphine. As the pain is reduced from the
femur injury he is discovering other pains in his body.

Although his injuries are serious, we should all be thankful he is alive. If
the tower had fallen 180 degrees, he would have landed in the sharp rocks
along the coast. As it happened, he landed on the grass where the ground was
softest. Unfortunately, that side put him under the tower which caused the
break in the femur.
He is recuperating with his wife at his bedside.

Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He will be there at
least 7 to 10 days.
