Entering the mobile category was a spur of the moment trip and I didn't
spend a lot of time getting ready. I used the new software for the VQP by
Andy Arnold KG4FSP I think is the call
(http://cgibin.rcn.com/awarnold/cgi-bin/home0.pl). The software looks really
promising but did run into some trouble when my computer crashed and I lost
several contacts. It was a really good thing that I took a extra copy of the
program with me because I have to reinstall the software Sunday morning.
Thank God I made a backup of the log before going to bed Saturday night. At
the start of the contest Murphy stuck with high SWR on the antenna I just
tuned the day before. Saturday's weather was beautiful, prefect for the
mobile category until Sunday when it poured and poured rain. But all in all
I was really pleased with my results for the small effort I put in. I
learned a lot and will make several changes for next year, for one thing a
driver/op is a must as I lost several contacts due to having to drive and
stop to run the county I was in. Although going down Route 360 I was sending
CW with the Vibroplex and logging on the laptop with good success, on the
back roads it was a different story. That's where number 2 comes in, strap
down laptop and key! Number 3, need filters for my Icom 706, other than that
the rig operated GREAT! Number 4, need to work on filtering the inverter and
ignition noise. Number 5, purchase quick disconnect kit for antennas, got
soaked in the rain changing bands.

The rest of the story:

SSB 121 Qs
CW 140 Qs
Mobile 27 Qs
Mults 72

Ran 11 counties

Total score 36,304

Thanks for all the contacts and congrats to all for putting in a effort, I
missed hearing a lot of CVCC. Loudoun county was out in force in a big way
and I think that we have a revival started. Let's try and take all the
plaques next year, what you say? I have also started a reflector for the
VQP, if you would be so kind to spread the word or would like to join please
