Amateur Radio License Class Beginning in 
third week in April 2018*
If you have ever been curious about getting an amateur (?ham?) radio license, now is the time!? A free entry level Technician class will be given at the Stamford Government Center starting
April 14th, 2018.
With ham radios, you can communicate from the top of a mountain, your home, or your car, all without relying on the Internet or the cell phone network.
You can take a radio wherever you go. You will also learn some basic electronic skills that are helpful in daily life.
Having a ham radio license means that you have access to radio equipment that can be used for many purposes.? While many hams use the radios purely as a hobby, others also use them for serving the community.

Local clubs provide communication for events, like bike rides and Public Service events. We also use our radios to supplement communications during CERT deployments.
The classes will begin on April 14th 2018.
The classes will be from 10:00am to
12:00 at the Stamford Government Center at
888 Washington Blvd, Stamford, CT (Google
 Maps).
There is no charge for the class, although we will ask you to buy the Amateur Radio Relay League?s training manual for $25.? In addition, it is suggested
 that you purchase an entry level radio so you can begin to listen to things right away. They cost about $30 on Amazon:

Join us in Orange at the Boy Scout of America - Connecticut Yankee Council?s biggest youth event of the year.  

>From May 11 ? 13, 2018 CT Yankee Council will hold a Council Wide Camporee, ConnJam18. This even happens once every 3 years, and attracts between 3,000 ? 5,000 scouts from both in our local council and outside of our council.  

This is an excellent opportunity to ?Share The Magic? of Radio Scouting with youngsters eager to learn and experience new things. 
- It also is a great way to show-case Amateur Radio to Adult Scout Leaders.

Since ConnJam 2015 (our first experience), many scouts have moved on in their lives and a whole crop of new Scouts have entered the ranks. 
This year, on Saturday, May 12, we are looking for about 30 volunteers to come out to Work in teams at the Amateur Radio activity stations.
- Full Day or Half Day Shifts are available

Specifically, we are looking for folks to help with:

The Radiogram Message Center
- Put your NTS Traffic Handling skills into action

Morse Code Central 
- Teach Scouts how to send their name in Morse Code

Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF)
- Introduce Cub Scouts to ARDF and help them find the lost Ewok (err? hidden transmitter)

- Get scouts involved (Hands On) using wireless digital communications (2 stations needed)

Information Booth
- Speak with visitors about Amateur Radio opportunities in Scouting (i.e. ?Radio Scouting?)   

GOTA (Get On The Air) Stations
- Get Scouts "On The Air" having a "conversation" - NOT a Contest Contact

 The Bloomin Metric is the premier public service event in southern
Fairfield County.  It is a bicycle ride (not race) put on by the Sound
Cyclists Bicycle Club every May with proceeds going to a number of local
charities.  There are typically about 2600 riders (including "ride
marshals").  The ride offers a number of routes, all departing from
Sherwood Island State Park, and some going as far north as the
Redding/Newtown border.

Hams provide radio communications for a small fleet of support vehicles, as
well as radio communications to the rest stops.  We have a ham in every
support vehicle maintaining radio contact back to Sherwood Island.  We
direct the operations of the support vehicles to keep the routes under
patrol, and handle the communications with riders if they call in to the
event's help line because they need assistance (typically mechanical
breakdowns).  We have been providing communications for this event for
close to 30 years and have an excellent working relationship with the event
organizers.

We need ham volunteers for the event.  Figure it as a most-of-the-day
event.  We generally meet at Sherwood Island at about 7am.  While most
people are done by about 1pm, some people wind up staying until about 3pm
to take care of the last of stragglers.  We need 18-20 hams.  If you can't
do 7am - 1pm, but can do part of the time, we can probably use you.

You do not need to be an experienced ham or experienced in this kind of
work to participate.  We will train you on whatever you need to know.  It
helps if you have a 25 or 50 watt mobile radio and a magnetic mount
antenna, but if you don't have one we will provide one.

I would like to add that this is an excellent way to practice your communications skills. There has been some chatter lately from people who think ARES needs to get its act together in Region 1, and that people want to participate in training and drills. Well, here you go.  In region 1, ham radio?s primary service to the public is supporting these events, and we do more of them than other regions.  Public service is not sitting at home checking into the snow desk or weekly nets.  Bike rides, running races, Boy Scout events,  kayak races are high visibility public events for hams.  And they are a ton of fun. (Not to mention, there is usually free food and a T-shirt)

 

This is one reason why the FCC gives us frequencies, and towns give us space for our clubs.

 

So you have two months advance notice. Please participate in these signature events for Fairfield county ham clubs. No experience is necessary, the organizers will pair you up with someone if needed.
