This past Sunday, June 10th, members of GNARC, SARA and FARA provided the
communications for the MS bike ride charity event. This ride, while it does
not have as many riders as other events, still has 4 courses, ranging from
10 miles to 75 miles. Comms were carried by the Norwalk 146.475 repeater.
Ham radio operators provided overall communications so the ride director
knew the progress of each of the four rides, and if any riders were not
accounted for. Our scout vehicles helped several riders get back on course,
fixed downed route marker signs, and tracked the tail end of the rides to
assist in planning the shut down of rest areas.
Fortunately there were no serious accidents or falls, and no riders needed
transport.
After the event, the organizer made a point of coming over to thank us, and
indicated that they could not do the ride without ham radio. She also said
our group does a much better job then the ham groups in other parts of the
state!
Thanks to: Jon AI1V, Joe KC1AUH, Steve KB1YLQ, Lyz W1LYZ, Victoria KC1IRW,
Michael N1PLH and son, Jeff KB1MZL, Dave N1DPD.
It was a long day, roughly 7am to 3pm for net control, but we provided a
great service, and got the T-shirt!
Many thanks for putting in so much time,
Paul Lourd WB2JVB
