You may need to add a bunch of ground straps to various parts if the vehicle's parts and body to reduce/minimize/eliminate the noise. 73, Douglas WA1SFH On April 13, 2018 9:24:15 AM EDT, "Steve, KB1YLQ" wrote: >Looking to go mobile HF down to Hamvention.? 102 fiberglass whip.? >Mounted to a jaw thingy clamped to my bed step handle. I have tried that arrangement and found that a loaded whip works much better on the lower frequency bands which will be where you want to operate. I found that both hamstick types, and hustler whips worked quite well. The tuner will allow covering a whole band, which the whips won't do themselves. You can even work a band lower than the whip is designed for (30 m with 20 m whip, for example), it doesn't work quite as well - but easier than changing antennas while driving at 75! I preferred the hustler, only because they broke down into parts that fit in my trunk. I found CW was much more successful than SSB, but have been known to break pileups on 20 SSB from time-to-time, and had many memorable contacts including a VK on 20 SSB as I left the house one morning. We were both 59+ and he was the only signal I heard on the band. It has to be worse than texting while driving! Tuning the radio is bad enuf -- the best was with the control head on the dashboard so you had a chance of seeing the exhaust pipes in front before you hit them. I used Vibroplex paddles that dropped right into the space above a pair of cup holders in my console. The feet stayed put within the holders and it worked perfectly. I did it with manual transmission cars and found that it was easier to move my hand from the paddles to the shift lever than to put down a mic to do it. The breakthrough for me came after a while of listening to CW while I drove and realizing that I could copy very well without a pen and paper, even though I'd always done that at home. So you can start out on SSB and then listen to CW while there are no SSB contacts. I started out chasing DX (worked all but one continents from the car during my ARRL commuting days), but ended up ragchewing on 40, which seemed the most reliable during the morning commute. I will confess that I did write down call signs, but not in real time. While I could copy them fine, remembering them after 10 min was another matter (what was your name again? ) -- perhaps a byproduct of my advanced years! The Bloomin Metric is the premier public service event in southern Fairfield County. It is a bicycle ride (not race) put on by the Sound Cyclists Bicycle Club every May with proceeds going to a number of local charities. There are typically about 2600 riders (including "ride marshals"). The ride offers a number of routes, all departing from Sherwood Island State Park, and some going as far north as the Redding/Newtown border. Hams provide radio communications for a small fleet of support vehicles, as well as radio communications to the rest stops. We have a ham in every support vehicle maintaining radio contact back to Sherwood Island. We direct the operations of the support vehicles to keep the routes under patrol, and handle the communications with riders if they call in to the event's help line because they need assistance (typically mechanical breakdowns). We have been providing communications for this event for close to 30 years and have an excellent working relationship with the event organizers. We need ham volunteers for the event. Figure it as a most-of-the-day event. We generally meet at Sherwood Island at about 7am. While most people are done by about 1pm, some people wind up staying until about 3pm to take care of the last of stragglers. We need 18-20 hams. If you can't do 7am - 1pm, but can do part of the time, we can probably use you. You do not need to be an experienced ham or experienced in this kind of work to participate. We will train you on whatever you need to know. It helps if you have a 25 or 50 watt mobile radio and a magnetic mount antenna, but if you don't have one we will provide one. Please contact me at jon.perelstein at gmail.com if you're interested. 73 Jon, AI1V From svj58 at optonline.net Mon Apr 30 17:56:05 2018 From: svj58 at optonline.net (Steve, KB1YLQ) Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2018 17:56:05 -0400 Subject: [CTSARA] This Thursday is meeting night Message-ID: <61.9D.08474.6F097EA5@mta3.srv.hcvlny.cv.net> Good afternoon SARA and friends.?
