Disaster Relief Is the subject of this months program. Social from 7:00 to 7:30 pm - meeting starts at 7:30. Fairfield Police Station on Reef Road.
November 6, 2017
Two individuals will discuss amateur radio in support of disaster response.
Communications During Disasters and Emergencies - Dave Heiden, W1DVE, is the Senior Director of Emergency Services for the American Red Cross in this region. He will discuss his experience deploying for the Red Cross, how Ham radio can be integrated into disaster response, the importance of building local auxiliary communication capacity for the future, and the role volunteers with communications knowledgeable can play during times of need.
Communications before, during and after disasters are critical to emergency operations and life safety, but are sometimes inadequate or severely disrupted. Disasters such as the recent hurricanes have again brought to light the important role that Ham radio can play in filling the communication gaps and providing additional capacity for life-saving communications.
Experience in Puerto Rico as a Ham Volunteer - Mike Miciukiewicz, K1MJM, just returned from Puerto Rico where he supported the amateur radio disaster communications effort. His initial mission was to provide a way to gather outbound health and welfare messages and put them into the Red Cross’s Safe and Well System using Winlink. However, the mission changed once he arrived and the needs turned out to be much greater. Mike will relate his experiences during his three-week effort.
