Hello Region 1 ARES Team Members!
It is SUNDAY. and time for the weekly "CT ARES Region 1 Relay Net"

- All stations are welcome to Check-In.


FACT:  
Most ARES Team Members in Region 1 cannot access a linked repeater for the
weekly CT ARES Section Emergency Manager (SEC)/Section Manager (SM) Net.



If you are one of these stations, we have Good News for YOU!
 

We Do it "OLD SCHOOL"
(ARRL = American Radio RELAY League).
We are running a weekly RELAY NET to pass information to and from this
statewide net for those who can't Check-In directly. 



How It Works
The Net Control Station (NCS) will take Check-Ins from stations in Region 1,
and act as a Relay Station for those stations to/from the SEC/SM Net. 
- This includes Announcements, Reports, etc. in both directions

We will need to stay tight to the Check-In Window (8:10 pm - 8:15 pm) in
order to Relay information up to the CT ARES SEC/SM Net.

- After Checking-In, you will monitor the frequency and wait to the end of
the statewide Net to hear information coming back to Region 1 through the
Relay Station. 

 

Date:      Sundays

What:     The Region 1 Relay Net

Time:      8:10 pm

Where:  Norwalk: W1NLK (146.475 MHz)

 

Check-In Format
Please speak S-L-O-W-L-Y and give:
- Your Callsign, 

- Your First Name

- Current QTH (i.e. Town), 

- Power Source: Battery, or Commercial, or Generator

- State:  "Traffic" or "No Traffic" (as appropriate)

Then, wait to be recognized.

There is a period of time (8:15 - 8:25) when the Net is in STAND BY mode as
the Net Control Station moves to the CT ARES Statewide Net to log everyone
in for Region 1, gets Announcements and then returns to the Relay Net with
that information to wrap up the Relay Net.

Do you qualify as a Net Control Station (NCS) for this Net?
We are looking alternate Net Control Stations (especially in the Eastern
side of Region 1) to pitch-in on the Sundays when I may be out of the area.

 

NCS Qualifications: 
1. MUST have a good signal into both the Norwalk Repeater AND the Woodbridge
Repeater (W1WPD  442.500 MHz).

- I am thinking that stations located in the Eastern part of Region 1 (e.g.
Bridgeport, Stratford, Trumbull) might be good candidates
- I am also looking for stations in the Western part of Region 2 (e.g.
Shelton, Milford, Orange) as alternate NCS for this Relay Net 

2. Able to follow a simple Net Script.

3. Write a Check-In Log Sheet and forward that Log to me.

Please let me know if you have the right qualifications.

meeting,  Steve Dick, K1RF, will be giving a presentation entitled ?Low
Cost Test Equipment that you can buy on EBAY?.  Steve is a retired
electronics engineer who enjoys designing and building his own HF
equipment. The EBAY equipment he will be discussing is likely not familiar
to most Hams but provides a lot of bang for the buck because of technology
advances.  The equipment discussed will range from basic that many Hams
might use through more advanced equipment.  This equipment has been either
personally used by Steve or by other Hams who have used it successfully.
The beauty of this equipment is that no kit building is required. It comes
ready-to-go.

We want to get an idea of who wants to operate on Field Day.

If you would like to operate on Field Day, please reply to this email
indicating

1.  SSB, CW, or Digital

2.  Time and Day (Field Day operations run from 2pm Saturday June 24 to 2pm
Sunday June 25).  We're always scrambling a bit for overnight operators -
please consider doing an overnight shift.

If you're not an avid contester, you might want to avoid the first 4-6
hours because that's when things are at their craziest.  By 9pm things
start getting more sane and you can have a lot of fun.  Don't forget Sunday
morning, which is one of the nicest times to operate.

If you are newly licensed, or a technician class, and have little of no HF
experience we will get you on HF with assistance so that you can enjoy
yourself and experience Field Day.

Responding to this email is not a final, definite commitment on your part.
We need to get an idea of how many operators we are going to have and what
holes we have in the schedule so we can send Big Paulie and his
headcrackers around to volunteer additional operators for us.

Midway and Kure Islands *Reinstated* as DXCC Entities 05/11/2017

On March 31, 2017, the DXCC desk announced the deletion of Midway Island
and Kure Island from the DXCC entities list. The stated reason for this
action was because of changes in the administration resulting from changes
in Papah?naumoku?kea Marine National Monument, formerly known as the
Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument, of which the Midway
Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and the Battle of Midway National Memorial, the
Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary at Kure Atoll, and the Northwestern Hawaiian
Islands State Marine Refuge, of which they are all included.

After further review it has been found that the deletion of these two
entities is not supported by the changes that were made to the relevant
administrations. Therefore, the deletions from the DXCC list should not
have occurred and the two entities, Midway Island KH4 and Kure Island KH7K,
will return to the DXCC list as separate entities.

Members of the Stamford Amateur Radio Association (SARA) and the Greater
Norwalk Amateur Radio Club (GNARC) - along with members of the Fairfield
Amateur Radio Association (FARA) and ham members of various Region One CERT
teams - combined forces to provide communications for the 40th Annual
Bloomin Metric charity bike ride in Fairfield County.  We were pleased to
have four newly licensed hams (licensed within the last three months) as
part of the team this year.

The ride has 2500 riders with a choice of three routes (40km, 75km, and a
challenging 100km).  Our hams run an integrated communications network
covering the call center, a fleet of support vehicles, rest stops, repair
services provided by five different local bike shops, and event
management.  We interface with six different police departments and seven
different EMS organizations along the route.  Ham radio staffs the
communications center, provides radio operators for the support vehicles
(and in some cases also provides drivers), and has full dispatch control
over the support vehicles and logistics support for the rest stops.  During
today's ride, we directed responses to 38 different incidents in which
riders required support ranging from bicycle failures to injuries sustained
in accidents (fortunately, no accidents required EMS).  As part of the
effort, we operate a temporary cross-band repeater up in the hills of
Redding.

Paul W2HRO is coming back for another moon bounce DXpedition to CT.

He will be operating from Riverside CT on Saturday May 27 (the day after
tomorrow) from the home of Bill W1BKR, a SARA club member.  This was

Paul expects to be operating from about 7AM until about 7PM (note: yes,

Paul W2HRO is coming back for another moon bounce DXpedition to CT.

He will be operating from Riverside CT on Saturday May 27 (the day after
tomorrow) from the home of Bill W1BKR, a SARA club member.  This was
arranged fairly quickly by Bill, Fred K1FC, and me.

Paul expects to be operating from about 7AM until about 7PM (note: yes,
during the day, not at night).  Spectators are welcomed and encouraged.  If
you're interested, please email me for an address and parking information.

Anybody have any crimp-on male F connectors they can lend me (I'll replace
them with new ones)?  I need them for the moon bounce tomorrow.

Or a pre-made 50 ft cable with male BNC connectors?

I believe I do. I can shoot to my house now and grab them along with the tool. I think they are for RG58. Would that work?

We're set up and ready to go.  A twin-boom 2 meter antenna, each boom 13
elements.  Total length of each boom about 30 feet.  It's a marvel of
engineering and worth coming just to see the antenna.

We expect to be on the air from about 7:30 AM to about 5 PM.  We may be
able to go past 5 PM, but there's a tree that may block access to the moon
after that.  Again - note that this is a daylight operation!!!!

We hope to work 50-60 hams in Europe, South America, and maybe Asia.  Many
of them need CT for their Worked All States on 2 meters.  One ham even flew
home early from his vacation - from Seattle where he was vacationing to
Serbia!!!!
