Yesterday, members of the Greater Norwalk Amateur Radio Club (GNARC) and
the Stamford Amateur Radio Association (SARA) and the combined forces to
provide communications for the MS Charity Bike Ride. The ride encompasses 4
routes (10 mile, 25 mile, 50 mile, and 75 mile). Our task was to coordinate
dispatch of assistance to riders in the case of mechanical failure or human
injury. With 150 riders, there was only one major accident, one reported
flat tire, and one person who needed shuttle service. This years ride
presented particular challenges to volunteers and riders alike since this
was the first year the particular routes were used.
Thanks go out to (in no particular order):
Tina KB1UOB
Marc KB1YYN
Donna KB1TGW
Chris KB1QXR
Rob K3PUG
George AB1QK
Steve KB1YLQ
Marty KA1WBN
Extra thanks go out to Jon, AI1V, Terry, WB1JBO, and Mike, N1PLH. In
addition to being net control, Jon also acted as a SAG driver at the end of
the ride. Terry had signed up to be a SAG rider, but ended up using his
personal vehicle twice for calls. Due to miscommunications internally
between the MS Ride volunteers, Mike ended up being the only full time
support vehicle on the road, and covered quite a lot of terrain over the 7
hour event.
I am personally grateful to all of those who gave up a significant portion
of their Sunday to help out with the event. Thank you to GNARC for use of
the repeater.
73,
Sam - NV1P and Jon - AI1V
