The classes will begin on February 15th, and continue for six consecutive Wednesday evenings. The classes will be from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Greater Norwalk Amateur Radio Club?s communications center at 100 Fairfield Avenue in Norwalk (right off Exit 14 of I-95). There is no charge for the class, although we will ask you to buy the Amateur Radio Relay League?s training manual for $20. We have copies on hand. In addition, it is suggested that you purchase an entry level radio so you can begin to listen to things right away. They cost about $30 on Amazon. Details to be provided. Getting a ham radio license requires learning the rules and regulations, the basics of how radios and antennas work, and some simple electronics. The math is very simple - it's equivalent to "if you're driving at 60 mph and you have to go 120 miles, how long will it take you to get to your destination". Once you have your license, you can use the entry level radios to be able to talk all over the local area and the region (plus Westchester and Long Island) using ham radio infrastructure that is already in place (no charge for usage). While some people just use ham radio for emergencies, many find it fascinating and get addicted to experimenting with one of the many aspects of the hobby! There are active clubs all over Connecticut that will welcome you, no matter what your interests are. The class will be taught by Jon Perelstein (AI1V) and Paul Lourd (WB2JVB). Jon is president of the Stamford Amateur Radio Club and Paul is VP of GNARC. Please RSVP to Jon Perelstein (jon.perelstein at gmail.com) as soon as possible so we can have enough manuals on hand! At the end of the class, you will be able to take the test and get your amateur radio license. It looks FANTASTIC now. Please leave it the way you found it (or cleaner). In addition, if members want to donate items to members or to the club, please talk to a club officer to make sure we can take it and have room for it. The kitchen and Meeting area is shared space and is not ours to leave things in. Which brings up #6. 6. If the Comm Center or Meeting area is being used, please clean the area up and remove the trash before locking up and leaving. As we all now know, we are guests in the building and we are being watched. 7. I have been told that the 440 DMR repeater is back in service. Apparently the Power Supply for the amp went south and had to be replaced. Thank you Charles and Mike for handling that. 8. The club has purchased a new TS-590SG at the recommendation of the Technical Committee. The new rig is located on the VHF/UHF side of the club station (the North wall) and is antenna position #6. This location was chosen to give the operators separation and so that the 6 meter antenna can be used on the 590. Please see a club operator for instructions on how to use this new rig if you have any questions. 9. The HF Beam is still out of service. The Tech Committee will be giving a report and recommendation at the February meeting on replacing the tri-band beam. I am sure there are more items but I can't think of them at the moment.
