I am taking a road trip to the Eclipse in Nashville with my cousin, wife,
and a dog.

I want to program my FT 7900 for major repeaters along the interstates I
will be taking. I wired up my Volvo wagon with power poles. Mag roof
antenna. Hustler MX 270.

 

I have the Repeater Directory and programming cables, etc, but how do I know
which are major repeaters along the roads?

This website http://k5ehx.net/ will let you use Google Maps routing to find repeaters along your route. Click on Menu, then the icon that looks like a highway, then enter your starting point and destination in the box that pops up. You can download the list in a variety of formats. If you can't find the right one for your programming software, try the K5EHX "proprietary" format, which is just a CSV file with all the database fields in it.  Use your spreadsheet program of choice to edit the file to select the right fields and put them in the right order to import into your programming software (assuming it can import CSV files). Don't change the order of the entries, they will be in order from your starting point to destination. 

I use the same file to create a list of "Points of Interest" to load into my Garmin GPS so I can see which repeaters are nearby as I cruise down the highway. (I actually put the channel numbers into the file I import into the radio and use to generate the POI file, so the GPS tells me what channel to use for each repeater.)

We are ready tonight!

 

We have a tight 5 minute schedule for Check-Ins (8:10 pm - 8:15 pm).

During the period of 8:15 pm - 8:28 pm, the Relay Net is in STAND BY mode.

That is when the Net Control Station goes to the CT ARES Statewide Net and
conducts business there.

At 8:28 pm (+/-), the Region 1 Relay Net resumes with the Net Control
Station bringing information back from the CT ARES Net.

Thank you for your message regarding S. 1534, the Amateur Radio Parity 
Act of 2017. I appreciate hearing from you.

The federal government allocates radio frequencies to a diverse array of 
users, from HAM radio operators to the U.S. military. There are more 
than 700,000 radio amateurs licensed by the Federal Communications 
Commission in the United States. Currently, amateur radio operators are 
often denied the ability to install reasonable and necessary equipment 
at their own personal residencies due to regulations.

Amateur radio operators often provide valuable services to their 
communities. By allowing licensed users to have their own antennas, they 
can assist in emergency communication and rescue efforts by working with 
public service agencies when main lines are down, in critical times such 
as natural disasters. Cases in which HAM operators have aided in rescue 
efforts when other communications have failed can be seen during 
Hurricane Katrina in 2005, as well as in 2013, during the Boston 
Marathon bombing. On race day in Boston, amateur radio operators worked 
alongside the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency in providing 
real-time status updates regarding the developing situation and rescue 
efforts.

You may be pleased to know that I reintroduced this legislation in the 
Senate with Senator Roger Wicker on July 12, 2017. As you know, the 
Amateur Radio Parity Act would direct the Federal Communications 
Commission to amend their regulations to reasonably accommodate amateur 
operations.

Last year, local hams supported this event for the first time, and it was
very well received by the event management, so we have been asked back for
2017! See details below.



Unique public service opportunity! Region 1 ARES has been asked to assist
with the communications for the 2017 Lighthouse to Lighthouse 14 mile
paddling/rowing
race. The  proceeds from the event support Achilles International, an open
water kayaking team for those with disabilities.

This event is on Saturday, September 16th. The race starts at 10am, and
ends by 2pm. We will need to be there earlier to get in position.  Ham
radio operators will be positioned in multiple positions along the course
in support boats, on Sheffield Island, and at race control. At the present
time, this is preliminary and the details will be forthcoming, depending on
turnout.  Hams will be responsible for relaying safety traffic from the
paddlers (who are using VHF marine HTs) to race control over our repeaters.

If you are interested in participating in this unusual event, please *reply
to me* ASAP. You must be comfortable being out on open water in a
powerboat. You must have an HT and it is helpful to have an earbud or
headset.  There are also beach-side positions. This event is just about a
month away, so we need to get your response quickly!
