I'd like to officially congratulate Lisa Neuscheler, KC1DZZ who just passed
her *EXTRA* this morning !

Lisa got her Tech license after taking Paul's (WB2JVB) class in Wilton.
She passed her General last month and has also been working on leaning CW.
Lisa also comes to the Comm Center on Saturday morning and has coffee with
the guys.

Again CONGRATULATIONS LISA, we are all very proud of your accomplishments !

Our topic for this meeting is low power (QRP) HF operations, including a
review of the latest in QRP equipment, QRP best operating practices, and
antennas for portable QRP operations.  If you have any plans for vacation
travel this summer, or just want to get to a park or beach, this could be a
very useful presentation for you.

Perfect reason to change the venue to Bar Taco for brain grenade margaritas....
BTW, at the last minute I bit the bullet and purchased the Yaesu FTM400xdr. I know it's way too much radio for around here but for an extra $100 I am able to explore this APRS and some other very cool features. Who knows their Fusion might catch on...wishful thinking? They practically give away their digital Yaesu repeaters.

I installed the radio yesterday with the help of a friend. Now I will spend some time fiddling around with it. Will keep you posted and hope to see you tomorrow night. J.?John Lucarelli

Hi 
I do have IC7300 for last two weeks , great radio ,very good quiet receiver ,great noise reduction and very cool scope. I have all connected remotely and using Icom RSBA-1 program I can control my station from anyplace in the world ,my connection is little different then Icom cause I eliminate use of computer and I'm using Digi USB over IP device . I don't think there is any other radio available in that price range who can beat IC 7300

It's one of the best rigs on the market for the price
-  built-in good quality large panadapter with touch panel
- built-in antenna tuner
- Good receiver performance for the price. Rob Sherwood of Sherwood 
Engineering rates it above the TS590SG and the Flex 3000 though he says "How 
to rank direct-sampling SDR radios is a real can of worms."
- many features
- Many many positive reviews.

The main negatives I have heard about:
- The built-in antenna tuner has limited matching range.
- if you are a CW op and like to use QSK, the T/R relay is very noisy if you 
don't use headphones.  Some ops have significantly improved this by covering 
the relay (easy to get to) with coax seal, but this would void the warranty.
- some have complained about noisy fan and fan turn-on when you start 
transmitting

Gess Girard has one.

As many of you know, I follow vanity callsigns and like to help people get
new calls.  It is a hobby, like looking at vanity license plates on cars,
which I also do.

*Here is something that really gets me angry,* listen to this...

As you may know, if you change your call you basically lock up your
previous call for 2 years so that you can always go back to it.  For
example; Mark changed his call from K8ZW to AC1CW, Mark has 2 years to
reclaim K8CW call.  It's a great rule that allows you to get your call back
if you have buyers remorse. Unfortunately the FCC does not limit how many
of these calls you can lock up.  So we end up with CALLSIGN HORDERS.

Case in point: There is a ham in Florida named O. Gordon Williamson.

Gordon is currently N4TT (a great CW call).  Gordon has the following calls
tied up:

He is currently on the list for 2 new Vanity calls this month:

I agree,and not just because I'm applying for one. There should be a rule or a$! kicking put to the "I got the power" operators. But it's a shame that they have a Amateur radio license and spend all there time changing and tieing up call signs. I personally had to put a lot of thought into applying for a new call sign, I didn't want any old and it had to be"me". I said I won't change it but the one(i only applied for one) that I'm going for is what I want and probably if I get it will never change. ?Just the ramblings of a Amateur radio operator. :)

Random order?, 17 Days? Just so you know!
Valid applications are normally processed on the following schedule:
1.     Applications are considered "received" on the first Federal workday on or after the day the FCC  actually receives them (for online applications, up until 23:59 ET). This means that applications filed on a Federal holiday or weekend are considered to be filed on the next Federal workday.
2.     The FCC waits 10 calendar days . During this time, the FCC enters into their computer all paper applications.
3.     The FCC waits seven more calendar days. Even if  there are no other applicants, the FCC still waits a total of 17 days.
4.     On the first Federal workday after 17 days beyond the receipt date, the FCC batches for its nightly processing, all vanity applications with that same receipt date.
5.     Early the next morning, between 00:00 & 02:00 ET, that batch of vanity applications with that same receipt date are processed. Duplicate applications are dismissed, and the remaining applications are then processed in a random order (without regard to content, the order or time of day that the application was received, or any other factor). Successful applications are immediately recorded with the current date as the date of license grant. At this point (around 02:00 ET) you can verify in the ULS if your application has been granted, and if so, immediately start using your new call-sign. Your new license grant will usually show up here within minutes of being granted. Note that it will not show up in most other non-FCC databases until at least the FOLLOWING day.
6.     Note that FCC no longer automatically prints and mails a copy of your license to you, because your true license is legally the data in the ULS (see FCC rules, US Title 47 CFR ?97.5(a) & US Title 47 CFR ?97.7(a)).

I am sorry to report that we have heard that Gus Hedlund W1BV died last
week.  Gus lived in Darien and was a member of both the Norwalk and

Apparently he was in ill health and died of heart failure.

Subject: Successful Tree Festival

Hi all,

I would like to thank all of the volunteers who came out today to help out 
with the Tree Festival. The rain held off, so we managed to get quite a few 
people visiting the park. Thanks to their efforts traffic was smoothly 
routed, and everyone who attended was able to leave on a high note.

We had a tough day.  Even though the rain kept about half of the 2500
registered riders home, we had more flats, mechanical breakdowns, and
accidents than any two years combined.  ANY two years!!

Our ham contingent handled it without breaking a sweat - even the times
when we had eight or 10 different incidents running and not enough SAG
wagons.  The amazing thing was that incidents never happen individually -
things always went from 15 or 20 minutes of quiet to 15 or 20 minutes of
sheer bedlam.  Our people worked together well, kept their brains engaged,
and got the job(s) done.

AND, one of our hams discovered that there is no signal strength from an HT
operated inside a standard plastic porta-potty.  I smell the makings of a
QST article on porta-potty propagation.

the crew (well, nobody would call Marilyn "grizzled").

I'd like to especially thank Steve KB1YLQ for being our "lonesome end"
again  - sitting out by himself operating our cross-band repeater which
gave us perfectly clear comms from the upper loop, an area too far from the
primary repeater.

I'd also like to give special thanks to Sam (NV1P) and Terry (WA1JBO) who
stayed waaay late to help riders who were still on road after the end of
official coverage.

And the biggest thanks of all goes to Sam NV1P who always seemed to be on
as net control when things dropped into the proverbial handbasket.  He
stayed cool and kept things moving along.

I am doing a mod to my IC-756 Pro II and the mod calls for four 1N4454
switching diodes to isolate 2 low current relays in a switching matrix.

I think the diodes are regular old, dime a dozen switching diodes.  Does
anyone know if Radio Shack has anything close?

I'm actually thinking of throwing 4 diodes from my junk box in there as I
cannot see that it would make much difference.

Any ideas/suggestions?

(DO-35).  You can order them from mouser.com (10 cents each or 7.5 cents for 
qty 10.)  You'll pay more for the shipping than the diodes!! If you don't 
need the exact physical size, you can use the common 1N4004s rated at 400V 
1A from Mouser (4 cents each) or 3.5 cents qty 25, Mouser PN 583-1N4004-T in 
a DO-41 package

Hi Tom,

You can mke your own. Most junk boxes have them. I can give you four pins
that you can solder or crimp the cables to and a plastic body.

Also try Microcenter. They will likely have it. It's a bit of a drive but an awesome store. It's in Yonkers - 40 min from Norwalk.

Digi-key, mouser, mcm are all good places to look. ?Make sure you have the right measurement. It's a fairly common connector. Radio shack would be my go to, but they're hArd to find now.?
