Those of us (many I am afraid) who were licensed in the 70's and 80's remember the interference from the Russian "Duga" radar array, which was to serve the Russian military as an Over-the-horizon radar.


There is a very interesting movie documentary that you can download ($12.99 on iTunes) that has received very positive reviews.  In it, the conspiracy of a relationship between the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the Duga array is researched. Lots of closeups of the antenna are filmed - the guy actually went and climbed on the thing just metres from the still-hot reactor site!


This movie would make a great "Movie Night" as the main topic for a future meeting for any amateur radio club.

Our next GNARC Club Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 9 Mar 2016, at 
7:30PM Local time.

On 9 March 2016 we will do a few things differently;
First you will notice the 'Classroom Layout' of tables and chairs.
We are rolling out a new Projection screen for the meeting.

We will start the meeting with a Technical Presentation, to be given by 
Paul Danzer.
Coffee and donuts will be available on the buffet, immediately after the 
Presentation.
The Business portion of the meeting will follow.

*Presentation:*
We all have Personal Computers (PCs). A good part of our personal lives 
revolve around these machines, as well as our ham activities. But do you 
know why they are so popular? Where did they come from so quickly? What 
is going on inside? Paul Danzer, N1ii, will present a program that gives 
you insight into these devices, how they process data and what happens 
when you press a key. Paul will also bring to the meeting a miniature 
audio oscilloscope that you can put together from a kit for $34 and a 
new, high-capability digital scope ($500) that is scheduled to be 
reviewed in /QST /in the near future.

Paul has been a member of GNARC since approximately 1968 and has spent 
the last 18 years teaching, among other things, PC hardware at 
Housatonic Community College. Don?t worry, there won?t be an exam at the 
end of the program ? just coffee and doughnuts!


All are welcome.

I have a couple of Dell monitors that have display issues, clearly
electronics problems.

Do you know of anyone in the Stamford/Norwalk area qualified to look at
them? I know we live in a throw-away culture and that electronics repair is
a lost art and sometimes even impossible with today's highly integrated
systems, but I'd like to at least say I tried :-)

My name is Ed Efchak and I'm the PIO for the Fair Lawn, NJ ARC.

I'm hoping you can get the word out to your membership. We're having John
Crovelli (W2GD) as a speaker at our club this coming Friday, 18 March,
beginning at 7PM and we'd love to have any of your interested club members

The club is located at 10 minutes from the GWB and also easily accessed
from I-287 and the Garden State Parkway.

Late notice, but WECA is teaching a free eight week General Class licensing
class in Valhalla NY (about a 30 minute drive from Stamford).  The class
started on 3/15 but the first class is mostly review stuff so it wouldn't
be terrible to jump in starting the second week.

If you're interested, the class is held on Tuesday evenings and runs from 7
to 9:15pm at the Westchester Fire Training Academy, 4 Dana Avenue, Valhalla.

They will also be conducting a VE session on the ninth week of the series.
The VE session is, of course, $15.

I have PDF flyer if anyone would like a copy.

Subject: [CTSARA] Two Big Public Service Events

We have two major public service events coming up in the spring.  We are
going to need people - lots of people

May 22 (Sunday) - the Bloomin Metric.  A 2500 person 65 mile bike ride.
The clubs in lower Fairfield County have always turned out big-time to
support this ride (for over 20 years).  The ride includes the bicycle
portion of the Stamford Hospital Hope-In-Motion fund-raiser, so supporting
this is directly supporting a Stamford charity.  Because of terrain, it's a
challenge to get coverage of the entire route.  In past years we've used a
temporary cross-band repeater and DMR in order to get the coverage we need.


June 12 (Sunday) - the MS Ride.  A 102 mile ride that goes up above I-84 to
Brookfield, Roxbury, and Southbury.  It's a real technical challenge to
provide comms along the route - coverage last year involved two nets and a
temporary repeater.  This year we're looking at adding DMR into the mix.

Prior experience is NOT necessary.  We'll give you whatever training you
need and where possible pair you up with a more experienced operator.  What
is needed is a 25 or 50 watt mobile unit, a mag mount antenna that you can
mount on an event vehicle, and a cigarette lighter adapter (or big battery
figure 8 or 12 Ah)*.  If you don't have those, we usually have spares that
we can lend.

Both events provide really good food for the volunteers!!

Both events will require you for much of the day - the Bloomin is typically
from about 7am to about 1pm and the MS Ride is typically from about 7am to
about 3pm.  If you can't do all day, but can do a 3 or 4 hour block, we can
use you!!

Please folks - we've always impressed the local charities with our ability
to provide fantastic coverage for their events.  Our efforts have made it
to the local news media and into both Norwalk and Stamford City Halls.

Hi Guys,

I've been asked questions recently about FCC Commercial Exams. So for those
of you who want to boost your Resume, I suggest studying for and taking the
FCC GROL & Radar exam.  The GROL is the old 2nd Class Radiotelephone
license.  While it is not required anymore to work on commercial 2-Way
radios (except Marine Costal Stations), it is a great way to prove to a
potential employer that you have a basic knowledge of electronics.

The GROL is the basic FCC commercial test and the Radar is an endorsement
which allows you to work on ship and airport radar systems. The GROL is
just a little tougher than the Amateur Extra, but is well worth it. Amazon
has the book and software on sale.

Mike Corey, KI1U, joined the ARRL HQ staff in April 2010 as Emergency

law enforcement academy and public safety instructor, and on emergency
