Extra! Steve Passed Extra 03/10/2016!!, KB1YLQ EXTRA, EXTRA, New Question Pool! CAUTION: A bigger and badder Extra question pool will go into effect on July 1, 2016! Recommendation: Step up to Extra now, before the changeover! You've always wanted to be an Extra! Maybe you've even purchased the Extra course, but have put off studying. You have plenty of time to study and pass Extra by June 30, before the new pool goes into effect! Depending on your knowledge and memory, you'll need about 30 hours of study. Study one hour per day, and you could pass the Extra a month from today. It's that easy! Our 100% money-back guarantee makes it a no-brainer ? you pass the exam or get a full refund! What's not to love? Upgrade now to avoid studying the new pool with 713 questions, including about 25 new subjects ? stuff like orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ? yikes! What if you don't make it in time? We've got your back! Your Extra subscription includes the courses for both the old and new question pools. Not sure why you might want the Extra? Here are some reasons: a.. To have full access to all ham frequencies, including the less crowded Advanced and Extra portions of the bands. Some of the best DX is in the Extra segments. b.. To get a shorter call sign, which can be a big advantage when working a pileup. c.. To have full reciprocal operating privileges when you travel to CEPT countries (Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, etc.). d.. To be allowed to administer all exam levels as a volunteer examiner. e.. As a stepping stone for broadcast engineers to obtain the Certified Broadcast Technologist certification. f.. It sets your college application or resume apart from the crowd. g.. Exercise your brain. Any day you don't learn something new is a wasted day! h.. Did we mention that a bigger and badder question pool goes into effect on July 1, 2016? Already have the Extra? Yay, no more ham exams! Use this time to prepare for Field Day! ARRL Field Day! ALERT: The ARRL Field Day is coming to a location near you on June 25-26, 2016! Recommendation: Mark your calendars! Make your plans! The ARRL Field Day is one of the most fun events in ham radio. Every year, on the fourth full weekend of June, thousands of clubs and individuals all across the U.S. and Canada set up temporary operations ? in fields and parks, at Emergency Operations Centers, etc. On the surface it looks like a giant contest, with each team trying to score points by making contacts and exchanging information with as many stations as possible. The underlying reality is that we are testing our equipment and honing our skills for rapid deployment and around-the-clock operation of widespread emergency communications networks! Field Day is an excellent way to practice operating on the HF bands, and to make friends with local club members. We strongly recommend this activity, especially to new hams! One of the best ways to make new ham radio friends is to show up at the Field Day planning meetings and volunteer to help with station setup and teardown. Even if you're a total newbie at HF operations, the extra hands are always welcome, and you're sure to learn a lot! Not in a club yet? Find one on the ARRL club locator page. Pssst! Another option is to plan a vacation around Field Day! John, W1AI, and Christina, KT1NA, participated in Field Day 2013 with the Maui Amateur Radio Club on their honeymoon (how could she say no?), in a cow pasture on a cliff, overlooking the ocean. Think about the possibilities! Field Day checklist: a.. Contact the coordinators beforehand, get directions and information. b.. Decide how much time you will spend there. We recommend at least 4 hours of the 24-hour operating period, plus some time during setup or teardown. c.. Bring a copy of your current FCC license. If you're not licensed, hold only a Technician license, or have little operating experience, most clubs will let you operate the G.O.T.A. (?Get On The Air?) station, where an experienced operator will show you what to do. d.. It's better if you upgrade at least to General, or better yet to Extra, so you can participate more fully in the event. Yet another reason to get to Extra before the bigger and badder question pool goes into effect! e.. Bring a snack or meal to share! f.. Prepare for the weather and conditions ? indoors, outdoors, hot, cold, wet? g.. Have fun! h.. You've got the license ? now get radio active! Feel free to respond to this email with comments for the team. We love feedback! Thanks for being a part of the family! 73, Christina, KT1NA Owner/General Manager John, W1AI Owner/Developer/Coursemaster Patrick, W2ZAU Customer Support Manager Krys, KG7ZKO Customer Support Rep 2994 E Coconino Dr, Gilbert, AZ 85298, 888-857-6164. My HF Diploe G5RV(full size) where the coax goes into the pl259 at the end of the ladder line broke. In plain terms, the pl259 came off the coax. Do I put another pl259 on the coax end, or replace the coax? The coax is rg5x and it goes from the ladder line so239 to a MFJ (I know might fine junk) window pane. I am using the window pane to bring all my antennas into my second floor shack. It has a couple double sided so239's and a wing nut ground lug. It sits at the bottom of the shacks window and feeds my 10M, 2M/440 and HF leads into the room. Now back to the main question. Should I replace the coax with another length of rg5x pre made from HRO or change it to LMR 400. I think I have both. Thanks to all that reply Pro or Con. 73's. One thing to check is the impedance. With a G5RV, it's possible that the coax is something other than 50 ohms in order to get proper matching to the ladder line and antenna. If it's not 50 ohm, then you kind of don't want to replace it with LMR-400 because of the impedance mismatch it would create. As I understand it, LMR-400 is heavier (weight) than the typical RG-8x or RG-58. Depending on what length run you have, it may be too heavy for a free-standing dipole in which the antenna is not supported in the center. Check first about what the coax is and its impedance. 73 Jon On Mon, Apr 4, 2016 at 1:44 PM, Urso, Steve - Stamford, CT via CTSARA < ctsara at mailman.qth.net> wrote: > Good Day All: > I have a problem/question. If this G5RV has a balun at the base, then just change the PL259 and you are good to go.. Just dont change the length of the ladder line. I will assume your RG5x is really RG8X.. and that is fine coax for your power level. Now if you are referring to the Balun and the SO239 inside it has broken, either open it and replace the SO239, or order/make another balun to match the ladder line to coax. -C On Mon, Apr 4, 2016 at 2:05 PM, Jon Perelstein wrote: > I'm not familiar with RG-5X so I don't know how long it supposedly lasts in > open air environments nor what it's impedance is. > > One thing to check is the impedance. But my own G5RV is as I described above. My 4:1 DX engineering Balun is able to handle a kilowatt and cost me $145. Next time I am outside I will photograph the part number for you. We are going to need people - lots of people. Prior experience is NOT necessary. We'll give you whatever training you need and where possible pair you up with a more experienced operator. What is needed is a 25 or 50 watt mobile unit, a mag mount antenna that you can mount on an event vehicle, and a cigarette lighter adapter (or big battery figure 8 or 12 Ah)*. If you don't have those, we usually have spares that we can lend. May 22 (Sunday) - the Bloomin Metric. A 2500 person 65 mile bike ride. The clubs in lower Fairfield County have always turned out big-time to support this ride (for over 20 years). The ride includes the bicycle portion of the Stamford Hospital Hope-In-Motion fund-raiser, so supporting this is directly supporting a Stamford charity. Because of terrain, it's a challenge to get coverage of the entire route. In past years we've used a temporary cross-band repeater and DMR in order to get the coverage we need. This event is so popular, the clubs have been mentioned TWICE in QST for our participation. Please consider helping out at this event. Starts and ends at Sherwood Island, Westport. June 12 (Sunday) - the MS Ride. A 102 mile ride that goes up above I-84 to Brookfield, Roxbury, and Southbury. It's a real technical challenge to provide comms along the route - coverage last year involved two nets, APRS tracking, and a temporary repeater. This year we're looking at adding DMR into the mix. Starts and ends in Cranbury Park in Norwalk. Both events provide really good food for the volunteers!! Both events will require you for much of the day - the Bloomin is typically from about 7am to about 1pm and the MS Ride is typically from about 7am to about 3pm. If you can't do all day, but can do a 3 or 4 hour block, we can use you!! Please folks - we've always impressed the local charities with our ability to provide fantastic coverage for their events. Our efforts have made it to the local news media and into both Norwalk and Stamford City Halls. But wait! I said there were three events, and indeed there are. May 21 (Saturday) - Norwalk Tree Festival. This is a very different event from the first two, so it gets a separate section. The annual Tree Festival is an event where no money is exchanged, and is sponsored 100% by the city of Norwalk. By having us provide traffic control we save the city a great deal of money not having to hire the police to do traffic control. This year will be the 10th time the event will be held, and since event continues to become more popular each year more people show up. Last years attendance broke 2000, and they predict there will be even more this year. The whole event is at Cranbury Park, so there's no need to drive in 100 mile circles, and an HT is all you need. Lunch will be provided. If you aren't able to help out for the full 10-2 we can still use you. Please contact Jon for the Bloomin (jon.perelstein at gmail.com) and contact me (samd65 at gmail.com) for the MS Ride and Tree Festival.
