Rich Roznoy, K1OF, willdiscuss some of the applications that can make use
of an inexpensive SDR donglethat plugs into a USB port on your personal
computer.  Rich willdemonstrate how such an SDR dongle, along  with free
software, can letyou receive modes your standard ham rig can't decode. The
focus will be ontransmissions from VHF through microwaves, many

On the weekend of November 14th, CT ARES will be conducting its annual
Simulated Emergency Test (SET).  The actual test runs from noon Friday
 until noon Sunday. We expect most of us in Region One will participate on
Saturday the 14th.  The SET is a nationwide exercise organized by the ARRL
field organization.

The overall purpose is to test our capabilities to provide statewide
communications
to our served agencies, including the American Red Cross, local
municipalities and the CT Division of Emergency Management and Homeland
Security (DEHMS).

Here are the official objectives that the SET team developed. We will attempt
to participate in as many as we can, depending on turnout.

(1) Establish emergency communications (both voice and data) within and between
the five CT ARES? Regions ? to include fixed, mobile, and field-deployed
stations.

(2) Encourage the use of emergency power (battery, generator, solar,
and/or mobile)
by all stations during the exercise.

(3) Maximize the number of amateur radio participants ? the five
Regional District
Emergency Coordinators (DECs) will establish Resource Nets and Tactical
Nets as needed and will coordinate exercise play within their respective
areas.

(4) Utilize National Traffic System (NTS) format for all record message
traffic.

(5) Coordinate and integrate interplay between ARES?, NTS, and SKYWARN?
components.

(6) Incorporate appropriate elements of NIMS/ICS to the degree possible.

We do not know the exact scenario or script that will be played out. The goal
this year is to get AS MANY amateurs as possible to participate. Even if
this means you only check into a net once, you are helping!  We always see
patches and bumper stickers saying ?When all else fails?.?, but for that to
work you have to practice and participate! You don?t have to be an expert,
you don?t have to have any special ARES training and you don?t even have to
be an ARES member! Just pick up the microphone and have some fun practicing.

Please reply to me and let me know what times you would be able to be ?on the
radio?.

I have received a message from President Kay Craigie N3KN regarding the
Amateur Radio Parity Act.  Her message, reworded slightly for transmission
here, is below.  Club leaders:  Please forward to your club lists if you
don't see it there.  Thank you.

 

We are at a critical time for S. 1685, The Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2015,
in the United States Senate. There is reason to think this legislation will
be considered in the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and
Transportation as early as next week. That is an extremely important step in
the bill's progress towards success.

 

As you can imagine, opponents of the bill are becoming very active and ARRL
is taking steps to counteract that activity.

 

What needs to be done is quick and easy but I need you to do this today.

Connecticut Senator Blumenthal is an original co-sponsor of the bill, so we
know he is on our side. But it never hurts to say thank-you to a friend.

Please phone the Senator's office in Washington, DC, at or phone a local
office. Or send an e-mail to the Senator using his official web page. 

The message is simple:  "I'm a constituent and an amateur radio operator. I
appreciate the Senator's co-sponsorship of S. 1685, the Amateur Radio Parity
Act. Thank you."

Stamford.  All you need to do is check into the net.  Steve will be
monitoring both the analog repeater and DMR on Stamford CT TAC 1.

Some locations in the state will be operating additional nets at 1500 on
Saturday and 0900, 1100 on Sunday.  You are of course welcome to continue
all weekend and check into nets.

We will not be doing Skywarn or formal NTS nets this time.  If any of you
are Winlink capable, you are encouraged to send messages.

CT ARES will also have a formal HF Net running on 3.965 MHz and/or 7.280
MHz immediately at about 0815, 1015, 1215, 1415, 1615 on Saturday and 0815,
1015, 1215 on Sunday.  They will first try 3.965 but if propagation doesn't
support it, they will move to 7.280.

Thanks for organizing this today. I apologize for using the other freq. It was a hail Mary propagation as I drove around all over Greenwich with my baofeng to get a signal at exit 5 riverside shopping ctr....nowhere near my home. Finally moved through a number of channels until I reached Steve. Time to seriously think about NVIS for local greenwich disaster preparedness....

The annual GNARC holiday party is Thursday Dec 10 and is open to members of
all the clubs in the area.

It's always a good party with the opportunity to meet the folks from the
local clubs, talk about ham radio, share stories and technical ideas, and
just in general have a nice dinner with some good people.  A number of us
from SARA go every year and it's well worth it.
