From jon.perelstein at gmail.com Mon Mar 2 22:32:58 2015 From: jon.perelstein at gmail.com (Jon Perelstein) Date: Mon, 2 Mar 2015 22:32:58 -0500 Subject: [CTSARA] SARA Meeting - Thurs Night March 5 Message-ID: The March SARA Meeting will take place Thursday night March 5 at 8pm at Stamford Government Center, 6th Floor Safety Training Room Paul Danzer N1II will give a presentation on oscilloscopes. Topics will include - Scope Intro - Application ? Measuring PEP - Little History - Old Scopes vs Digital Scopes - Digital Scope Info - Software Scopes ?No hardware - More Applications (maybe, if time permits) For those of you who have worked with scopes in the past, there's been a lot of change in oscilloscopes from what you may have used 10, 20, 30 years ago. Paul is going to talk about the major developments such as digital scopes and software scopes (for example using your computer as a scope). For those of you who are new to the subject, oscilloscopes are a major piece of test gear that can be used to observe your waveforms to see if your gear is producing what it should be producing, and are the go-to piece of test equipment for debugging problems with radio and other electronic gear. Having used an oscilloscope to debug an RF feedback problem a few years ago, I can tell you that learning about scopes can make a big difference in dealing with problems. I know that I never would have been able to solve my problem without an oscilloscope. Pizza at John the Baker, 30 Long Ridge Road in the Bulls Head section of Stamford at 6:15. 73, Jon, WB2RYV P.S. Mark your calendars now for our April 2nd meeting - we have a couple of exciting things planned including: - Crowdsourcing CW Reading in Contests - a new concept that we've been testing that delivers high speed CW reading using low-to-mid speed CW operators. - Modeling a new category of environmentally friendly antennas. While primarily intended for stealth operations (e.g., HOA limited situations), some of these new antennas have some impressive numbers. - Something really exciting - announcement of the first-ever SARA sponsored DXpedition. We can't tell you where yet because we haven't gotten all the permits approved - but basically it's one of the more difficult places on earth to get a QSO. It's another of those storms with very sharp drop-offs on either side of the storm, and a difference of as little as 30 miles in the location of the storm will make all the difference. In theory, snow ending at 3pm shouldn't stop us from having our meeting. However Paul (N1II), our presenter, is coming from Norwalk so we'll just have to play it by ear based on his transportation situation. Jon, WB2RYV Stamford Amateur Radio Association (SARA) 2014 Annual Report and 2015 Dues Notice Thank you all for another good year. No major storms or disasters this year (), just another year of enjoying ham radio. Highlights for 2014: * With the merger of the Bennett Cancer Center Hope-In-Motion bike ride into the Bloomin Metric, we provided support for the Bloomin (along with members of GNARC and other clubs), and we did a great job of it. In conjunction with other clubs, we also supported the Bikes for Bikes event - with prominent mention in their newsletters that reach hundreds of their dedicated members. New this year some of our members participated in the communications support for the Fairfield Half Marathon and for the Harry Chapin Run Against Hunger (in Westchester). * Field Day - ahhh Field Day. Incredible performance all around. * Regardless of points, we had a great Field Day. We had over 70 visitors to the site, had cable news coverage on News 12, and had adio coverage on WSHU. The food was good and we had another great demo by Georgi Todorov K1GTT. Thanks to everyone who participated and special thanks to Terry W1TSM (our fearless Field Day leader) and to Ernest KA1NGG and Steve KB1YLQ (logistics - especially food). * We continue to have good attendance at the meetings with good programs. John WB1GRB continues to maintain an outstanding club website ( www.ctsara.org) with the best listing of local repeaters and the Mailman reflector is a major avenue for communications to hams throughout the area. Our Facebook page (Stamford Amateur Radio Association) continues to get more hits and members. We hope to have an antenna construction project at an upcoming meeting. * Eight of our members are members of Stamford CERT - which is the mechanism that the City has chosen to use for volunteer assistance in time of emergencies. Our CERT members are the backbone of communications within Stamford CERT and have been asked to provide communications training to other CERTs in the area. We need more hams in CERT!!!!! * Two of our members were pictured on the front page of the Advocate while participating in the statewide Emergency Preparedness drill back in June. During that exercise, we demonstrated Winlink to City officials and got to use it in communications with state officials. The Board wishes to thank all of you who participated in 2014. As always, the club IS growing and there is always need for members to help plan and run the various activities. Looking forward to 2015, we have opportunities: * To work with NBC Sports, * To help students at AITE with electronics and math, and help students get their ham licenses, and * If our work with AITE goes well, to set up a ham club at AITE. ***** Membership is open to all licensed hams. Dues are $25 for the year, which includes membership for you and members of your immediate family. Dues are $10 for matriculated students and hams that live outside a 50 mile radius of Stamford. New hams are welcome to be members at no charge for the year in which they first become licensed. In the past, club members have made donations in addition to dues to support activities of SARA. We are a 501(C)(3) corporation and your donations qualify for tax deductions under the 501(c)(3) rules. Dues to SARA help us to fund the following: * Costs associated with our website (ctsara.org) * Business registration and taxes * Mailman reflector * Insurance * Operation of 4 repeater radios at 2 sites plus their care and maintenance * Field day operation which includes equipment, supplies and four meals In an effort to reduce SARA?s substantial cost for sending out bills we are moving to electronic information and notification. In all the above endeavors we try to spend your duescarefully and wisely and we appreciate your understanding. The purpose is to test communications between the sites typically opened as shelters, town EOC?s and the Red Cross office in Bridgeport. This drill will be coordinated by Jon WB2RYV, Larry W1LAG and me. Hams will be assigned to a location for the test and will perform comm tests using analog FM, simplex and repeater, and DMR if possible. The locations will be Stamford, Norwalk and Bridgeport. If we get sufficient volunteers, we will include Fairfield and Westport. The test will not take long, and will involve simply making contact and following a simple test plan that will be sent to those volunteering. Please send an email to me directly at wb2jvb at arrl.net if you can spare a few moments for this test. Let me know which town you would prefer. Thank you in advance for your participation helping one of our major served agencies! This will be in three parts. 1. Fred K1FC will talk about ecologically friendly amateur operations, with a focus on green antennas and energy sources. Some of the antennas may be especially useful for those whose operations are limited by HOA restrictions. 2. Andy N2CN will debut the results of our efforts to develop crowdsourcing CW reception. This exciting new development will enable run-of-the-mill CW operators to work together to copy CW at contest speeds. 3. Jon WB2RYV will talk about a planned SARA DXpedition to one of the most difficult places on earth to get a QSL card. Thursday, April 2, Stamford Government Center (888 Washington Boulevard), 8pm in the 6th Floor Safety Training Room. Pizza at 6:15 at John The Baker, 30 Long Ridge Rd in Stamford. 73 Jon, WB2RYV
