Hi all,

On June 14th the National MS Society will be hosting Bike MS, starting at
Sherwood Island park. For those who are familiar with the Bloomin Metric
it's going to be similar, though the longest route for this is 100 miles,
and not 100k. It also goes further north than Danbury, ending in
Washington, CT. We're going to need a good number of volunteers, so I hope
that many of you are available. We need to be at the park at 7am, and it
should end by 4. Food will be provided.

Events like this are a lot of fun. No experience needed. Please consider
volunteering. Please email me as soon as possible to let me know your
availability.

I would like to strongly encourage SARA members to participate in this
event - it's going to be an interesting and technically challenging effort
because of the distances involved.   SARA and GNARC have done a great job
in showing what two clubs can do when they work together in events like
Bloomin Metric and Bike4Bikes, and this is both another opportunity to show
the rest of CT how we work together down here as well as another
opportunity to show the world what ham radio can do.

Hi all,

When I was working the tree festival someone came up to me asking if I knew
someone who can repair radios. Naturally I said sure, here's my info, and
he finally contacted me with details.

What he has is a 10 tube model 10A1 from about 1937. All he knows is that
cosmetically its good, but it doesn't work. Is there anyone who has some
familiarity and is willing to do a house call?

You have a unique opportunity to change the face of Amateur radio for
the future if you act now.  My State Government Liaison Jonathan WF1H
and I want to talk to you about H.R. 1301, The Amateur Radio Parity Act
of 2015.  This bill was introduced by Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-16)
with Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) and eleven additional original
co-sponsors.  To date, there are 64 co-sponsors but we need many more.
As I am sure you have read in QST, this bill is one that needs the
support of every single Amateur radio operator.  It directs the FCC to
extend their existing PRB-1 regulations of ?reasonable
accommodation? of Amateur Radio communications to include private
land use regulators. This would afford us the ability to negotiate with
homeowner?s associations in residential developments.  As you know,
private land use regulations routinely include restrictions that
completely preclude Amateur Radio communications operators from
installing any type of outdoor antenna system. The ?reasonable
accommodation? policy has for 30 years applied to municipal zoning
ordinances. This Bill would extend the policy to operators living under
private land use restrictions. The FCC has asked Congress for guidance
in this area and this Bill provides it. Over 60% of new homes today are
part of homeowner?s associations.  We need to do all we can to protect
the future of our wonderful hobby and service.

This is what you need to do today.
(1) Go to http://www.arrl.org/hr-1301 where you will find a very
complete resource.  Read about the bill or read the entire text of the
bill.
(2) Find out who your representative is; there is a link within this
ARRL resource which will point you to information on your rep.  Tell
non-members to go to http://www.house.gov , enter their zip code and
find their representative?s contact information.
(3) View the sample letter and accompanying instructions.  If you like
that letter, download, fill in the appropriate information, print and
sign.
(4) Then all hams should send that letter to ARRL, Attn HR 1301
Grassroots Campaign, 225 Main Street, Newington, CT 06111.
If you prefer to write your own letter, please send that letter to the
above address.  ARRL will present these letters in person to
legislators because it will give staff the chance to interact directly
with the representatives.  Mailing reps directly causes additional
delays because of security procedures that must be followed with all
paper mail.

(5) If you wish to contact the rep further by email, that?s fine but
please initially get the hardcopy letter to ARRL.  I would enjoy
hearing from you when you?ve completed this task just to get some
idea of count.  You can email k1eic at arrl.org with the subj 1301.

While the CT ARES DMR network is being reconfigured, we might be able to
get CT Statewide on some of the MARC repeaters in New York State.

Try White Plains or Carmel.  You'll probably need a good external antenna
for either one.  I know I can get White Plains from my house using my roof
antenna and I'll try Carmel.

I was listening to the areas net Sunday night from Bridgeport. Most of Connecticut is connected by phone line or Wi-Fi while 
 they are working on the microwave system. Unfortunately this end of Connecticut is not connected. They are hoping to connect this end of Connecticut Stamford Danbury and I  I think Wilton  temporarily sometime this week temporally.

FYI - Got these two emails today from a Club in MA, just outside of Lowell.

Hello all,

I've been watching this Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). 

We have already had the significant blackout, and have mostly recovered.

The flare was 0816 UTC. 

Flare related blackouts rarely last 36 hours.  


The resulting CME, if headed our way, may create disturbed conditions with
the possibility that 15m and 10m may open.

The real significant event was the solstice CMEs as that produced a G3
storm, this current one is G1.

The side effect is 6m has been open Big Time, and I've been working 5s, 8s,
0s from the mobile!

Well, this Field Day promises to be a very interesting event. 

 

The primary reason is the following:

Today, June 25 at 0816 Z the sun produced a huge flare to a magnitude of M
7.9.  

This fits exactly into the weekend's time-frame for radio blackouts!!

 

What should be expected is that the HF bands will be almost useless except
for very local contacts, not a good condition.

 

We should emphasize the lowest bands for our efforts,  ie.  160 meters may
be the only band to work at all depending upon the actual CME that hits us.

 

I think we should rapidly think about how we can deploy 160 meter antennas
quickly.  Simple inverted L antennas will work fine.  A 102 foot leg G5RV
antenna will work well on 160.  Anyone have one of those that could be used
(span is 204 feet).  Drooping ends work fine too.  On 160 it is a dipole and
thus the orientation should be from south to north and it is center fed.  It
uses 83 feet of 600 ohm ladder line for the feed which can be directly
connected to 52 ohm coax.  The coax should have a choke to keep the rf off
the shield or a 1:1 balun can be used.  Either way works well.  I am not an
expert on it but there is lots of literature on the web about it and we have
some real antenna experts out there that can be a big help tomorrow to make
decisions about this.

 

The power grid can be expected to take a hit and thus our generator power
will be key to our operation.

So in case you haven't been paying attention to the weather forecast - it's
supposed to rain this weekend.   Pretty much all weekend.  Given the
forecast, we're figuring out what we need to stay dry for Field Day
operations, thus the emails for tarps and pallets.

One more request - anybody have an enclosed trailer that we can use to set
up one of the stations?  It would be nice if it had windows and
ventilation, but right now we want to see if anybody has a trailer.
Obviously it has to be something with wheels and is properly licensed so
that it can be brought to the site.

We scored over 1-1/2 inches of rain (probably about 1.75 inches of rain)
and approximately 80,000 gallons of water.  We also handled 25 mile/hour
winds.  Our best showing in decades!!

In other news, propagation was terrible because of various solar storms
that you probably read about.  Seriously bad - everyone across the country
suffered.  Some unfortunate club in California managed to get into their
local newspaper with a headline "Solar storm forces Ham Radio drill to shut
down early"  (http://www.signalscv.com/m/section/36/article/139123/).

We did not shut down early.  Our crazy members kept on pushing right to the
end, despite rain, wind, solar storms, blown finals, particularly hungry
bugs, and the Nature Center's guinea hens who simply would not take "No"
for an answer when they asked to operate.  Good engineering by Terry
Papazidis, Andy Siegel, Steve Urso and a few others kept our tents on the
ground and free of water.  We did not have to shut down at all.

Preliminary results are

7,702 points total on 2,065 QSOs (including GOTA)

For comparison,
2014 was 11,334 points on 3,750 QSOs (including GOTA)
2013 was 8,910 points on 2,550 QSOs (including GOTA)

We're still checking the logs to make sure we have everything correct, but
it's likely that 7,702 will be our final number.  It's also likely that's
going to be one of the better 3A scores in the country and certainly in New
England.

In addition to all that, we managed to pick up a new member - a local ham
who never knew we existed until he came across our Field Day info on a web
site and came by to visit.

I was sending this out to someone else. And for some reason Mailman got on and I was unable to stop the email.
i'm not recommending somebody to buy this program but for me it has worked very well I've used it for two years and made a big difference as far as performance and fewer problems with windows.
