In case you haven't heard, a couple of snow flakes are coming our way. I
was at the Mayor's 9am planning conference and again at a 2pm meeting.
The City has designated Government Center and the fire houses as shelter
areas until the storm ends. Neither the City nor Red Cross want to open
any shelters until after the storm has passed for fear of people leaving
their homes in the middle of the storm. They do expect that they will have
to open at least one shelter plus one or two warming facilities after the
storm. A warming facility is a place where people can go for a couple of
hours to get warm, have a shower, get a hot meal, and charge up their
electronics - but not sleep over.
If/when they open the shelter(s)/warming facilities, the City expects to
staff them with CERT members, plus some Red Cross and some Dept of Health
people. In addition, CERT people will be helping to staff the City's
Citizen Service phone line.
We would love to get a few more hams into CERT because it's the CERT hams
who provide the communications backbone for CERT.
