Every radio has to have a unique Radio ID - if it doesn't then communications between you and other stations may be disrupted if there are two radios with the same Radio ID on the air. Many networks will block you if you do not have a valid Radio ID. There is no cost for the Radio ID. MARC (Motorola Amateur Radio Club) handles the registrations. You can apply for your Radio ID at http://www.dmr-marc.net/cgi-bin/trbo-database/register.cgi Just scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "User Registration". It usually takes a few hours before they email back your Radio ID, but if you have a radio on order you might as well get the ID now. You will enter it into your radio using the programming software for your radio. 73 Jon, WB2RYV From wb1grb at hotmail.com Sat Jan 17 16:59:08 2015 From: wb1grb at hotmail.com (John Sabini Jr.) Date: Sat, 17 Jan 2015 16:59:08 -0500 Subject: [CTSARA] effect from 3 am to 8 am EST Sunday Message-ID: Freezing rain advisory effect from 3 am to 8 am EST Sunday. * Locations...southern Fairfield and southern New Haven counties in Connecticut. The Baofeng UV5R / UV82 series are known for having a very loose squelch. There are ten Squelch levels. Zero is OFF, One through Nine is barely closed. The Latest Daily Build of CHIRP has added a Service Settings tab< http://www.miklor.com/COM/images/SquelchSet7.jpg> which allows you to change the internal values of the various levels. A weak signal will open the receiver, and only a solid signal will open at level Nine. This is described in detail at the Miklor website under Resolve the UV5R / UV82 Squelch Issue< http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Squelch.php>. Note: This eliminates popping static from opening the squelch at random. Really annoying when mobile. Charles G. The ARRL contributed video from W1AW and yours truly, as president of the Broadcast Employees Amateur Radio Society (BEARS), was interviewed. I also demonstrate the operating capabilities of the BEARS EmComm van. BEARS, as some of you know, is the flagship repeater system for NYC ARES - and maintains a large multi-state repeater system, the Disney Amateur Radio Interconnect (DARI), linking affiliated repeaters in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, greater Washington DC, Pennsylvania, Florida and California. (You can learn more about our system at www.w2abc.org). The Op 7 specials each year are dedicated to emergency preparedness -- and this is the first year in the long history of these shows that ham radio gets a star turn. WABC-TV is the most watched television station in the NY/NJ/CT area, and is also the most watched station in the nation. We gave the show's producers a fair amount of material...but it's impossible to know how much made the cut. Still -- and even on a Saturday night -- we'll get a lot of eyeballs exposed to the critical role ham radio plays in emergency response, in the largest media market in the world. As the person who directs emergency preparedness for the broadcast and support units of the ABC Television Network, I am especially excited about getting an opportunity to shine a spotlight on amateur radio. If you're in the greater New York area, I hope you'll watch -- and remember, if you are a subscriber to New York-area cable systems, you can also view the show on the WatchABC app on your mobile device. The app is in iTunes and in Google Play. 73 de KA2QPJ Howard Price BEARS President From svj58 at optonline.net Sat Jan 24 16:03:19 2015 From: svj58 at optonline.net (STEVE) Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2015 16:03:19 -0500 Subject: [CTSARA] Special weather statement black ice Message-ID: <4sfixdcr2e76sbr7uoxuwjly.1422133067990@email.android.com> via @WeatherBug Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone From wb1grb at hotmail.com Sat Jan 24 21:39:02 2015 From: wb1grb at hotmail.com (John Sabini Jr.) Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2015 21:39:02 -0500 Subject: [CTSARA] DMR: Digital Mobile Radio Message-ID: DMR: Digital Mobile Radio This is a forum for the discussion of all things DMR-related. I was at the Mayor's 9am planning conference and again at a 2pm meeting. The City has designated Government Center and the fire houses as shelter areas until the storm ends. Neither the City nor Red Cross want to open any shelters until after the storm has passed for fear of people leaving their homes in the middle of the storm. They do expect that they will have to open at least one shelter plus one or two warming facilities after the storm. A warming facility is a place where people can go for a couple of hours to get warm, have a shower, get a hot meal, and charge up their electronics - but not sleep over. If/when they open the shelter(s)/warming facilities, the City expects to staff them with CERT members, plus some Red Cross and some Dept of Health people. In addition, CERT people will be helping to staff the City's Citizen Service phone line. We would love to get a few more hams into CERT because it's the CERT hams who provide the communications backbone for CERT. 73 Jon From jon.perelstein at gmail.com Tue Jan 27 17:35:58 2015 From: jon.perelstein at gmail.com (Jon Perelstein) Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2015 17:35:58 -0500 Subject: [CTSARA] Fwd: GFARA Meeting Wednesday 04 Feb @ 730PM Fairfield Police Station ANTENNA GAIN In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: The Fairfield Club (GFARA) will be having another excellent presentation by Joel Hallas on Weds Feb 4. What Does it Mean?* We all have an idea of what gain means ? but what does antenna gain really mean and how do we measure it? How can we compare different manufacturers' antenna specifications and how can we make sense of all of their claims? This presentation, using easy to understand concepts ? such as how your flashlight works ? will bring some clarity to the antenna gain question. Also discussed will be how much gain do we need and under what circumstances does it matter. Questions will be addressed during and following the presentation. As is customary, coffee, soft drinks and light snacks will be provided. 73, Drum K1RDG GFARA.COM From tc4racer at gmail.com Thu Jan 29 14:42:06 2015 From: tc4racer at gmail.com (Paul Lourd) Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2015 14:42:06 -0500 Subject: [CTSARA] Gloves left at Comm Center Message-ID: If anyone left a pair of dark brown winter gloves at the comm center this past weekend, they are still here.
