I hope you are enjoying this LAbor Day weekend.... this beautiful summer seems to be coming to a rapid end! In fact, next Sunday is the Toughman Half Tri....that happened so quickly! I have gotten a few responses, but am sending this to all that have volunteered in the past. This event has many rest/water stops and *requires more* volunteers than any other event. We need your help! If you participated last year and are planning on participating again this year, *PLEASE*, let me know your intention. I can't plan properly if I don't know who is planning on coming. Historically, the week before the event, is when we get the most confirmed participants. I would really appreciate a current headcount by Tuesday if at all possible. Because of family matters, I would like to get the assignments planned by the middle of the week . IF we have to get more volunteers from other clubs I will need to know. SO far, I believe we have Allen C, Joey, Bob W, Jamison, Simon, Robert, Peter, Ron, Tom R Victor and Eugene...... that's just not enough! Please let me know your availability. This event has road and park closures so getting people to the location in a timely manner is important and requires more attention to detail.... I appreciate very much your participation. Please RSVP with your name, call sign, location from last year if applicable, time available. The discussion will include a computer generated animation of a tower strike using advanced software that produces a time domain animation showing voltage potentials and the lightning path through the tower into the ground field as well as related topics such as avoiding common grounding pitfalls, reducing static buildup in the antenna system and designing a fully grounded system. Products and techniques ranging from using a simple balun, using exothermic welding vs. clamps on the tower and inline surge protected coax will also be discussed. Following the formal presentation, there will be a question and answer period with Jeff and Joel Hallas, W1ZR, on hand to focus on techniques for reducing the lightning current that gets into the station and dwelling. The presentation will take place at the Fairfield Amateur Radio Association clubhouse at the Fairfield Fire Training Center, 205 Richard White Way in Fairfield. Anybody want to carpool? Jon ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Drummond Grinalds Date: Sat, Sep 20, 2014 at 1:33 PM Subject: GFARA Meeting October 1st Dear Fellow Hams: Please join us on Wednesday, October 1st at 7:30 pm at the Fairfield Fire Training Center as we explore topics relating to HF, VHF & UHF propagation. Bruce N1ZU will cover the major factors influencing propagation and signal degradation. He will review the types of data used to forecast propagation changes and how this data is gathered. Bruce will also discuss common sense ways to reduce signal losses. Additionally, several freely available propagation forecasting programs will be demonstrated to the group. For HF, planning DX with online, real-time information and for VHF/UHF, predicting line of sight contact probabilities using topographical mapping software, will both be presented. For CERT members, this is an excellent way to understand how hills and buildings can change how VHF radio signals behave. The computer program Bruce will demonstrate and which you can get for free on the internet can help you figure out the best place to put your antenna to have the best coverage. It can also tell you how far your signal will likely go. Those of us working the HF bands can benefit from a good review of the basics of propagation and can also see demonstrated state of the art DX prediction programs. This will become increasingly important on the backside of the cycle. 73, Drum K1RDG From tc4racer at gmail.com Mon Sep 22 08:39:50 2014 From: tc4racer at gmail.com (Paul Lourd) Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2014 08:39:50 -0400 Subject: [CTSARA] CERT/ARES net Tuesday 9/23 - 8pm.
