The National Weather Service in New York has issued a Wind
Advisory...which is in effect from 6 am to 6 PM EST Sunday.

* Locations...New York City...Nassau County...southern Westchester
 southern Fairfield and all of interior southern Connecticut

* hazards...strong winds.

* Winds...northwest 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

* Timing...Sunday.

* Impacts...some tree limbs and branches might fall onto power 
 lines causing scattered power outages. Strong winds will make 
 driving difficult on elevated roads and bridges.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph...
or gusts of 46 to 57 mph...are expected or occurring. Winds this
strong can make driving difficult...especially for high profile
vehicles. Use extra caution.

Dear Fellow Hams:

A quick reminder to please join us on Wednesday, November 5th at 7:30 pm at
the Fairfield Fire Training Center as we explore topics relating
to microprocessors and their application within amateur radio.

Inexpensive (almost free) and readily available microprocessors are being
used by many hams for amateur radio projects.

Jeff KB1MZL, Vice President of GFARA, has prepared an interesting program
for us.  He will briefly cover microprocessor history and theory before
demonstrating their use in the construction of a frequency counter project.

This program is an excellent opportunity to bring kids (both young and old)
interested in computer programming as microprocessors represent the link
between software and ham radio.

CERT members will enjoy this opportunity to see how to expand amateur radio
applications using a little imagination, microprocessors and software.

I know that John sent out a notice last week, but a couple of people have
emailed me asking if we're having a meeting this week.

We are having a meeting this week - first Thursday of the month as usual.

The topic will be grounding for the amateur radio station.  We will talk
about the three types of grounding (AC power, RF, and lightning).  We'll
also talk about issues with grounding rods here in rocky New England.  We
will NOT be spending any time on grounding towers because very few of our
members have towers (do any members have towers?).

To all:

 

Just a reminder that the statewide simulated emergency test will be
occurring this weekend. All 5 ARES regions will be active during this test,
including region 1 (our region).

 

You can find out more information and read the playbook at ctares.org

 

In our region, we will be participating on Saturday morning, for the most
part. 8am to 1pm. The Norwalk 2m repeater will be the primary regional net
repeater. ARES members in other towns that cannot reach Norwalk easily are
welcome to run a net, just me know if you do. Keep track of check-ins.
There will be a statewide HF net also, and I will announce the frequency
when it comes up. Traffic will also be passed via packet (although most of
us in region 1 can't reach the state packet net) and Winlink. If you have
capabilities to do this, let me know.

 

Please be listening to the repeater on Saturday. There will be some
opportunity to grab your go radio and proceed to a simulated emergency. I
can't say what, but there will be one in Stamford, Fairfield and Wilton.

 

All can participate, even if all you want to do is check in.

 

We are also attempting to link the Norwalk 440 repeater into the statewide
command net, which will be active every three hours over the weekend. Please
feel free to listen if we get that to work.

 

Please contact me OFF LIST if you have any questions or are willing to
participate more than just doing a check-in.

This month's meeting of the Board of Directors of the Stamford Amateur Radio Association was called to order at 8:00pm on this date at the house of Ernest Laug, KA1NGG.

Repeaters
---------

Jon P says that will very soon be getting a date from the city to work on the Sterling Farms repeater. He hopes to be able to do the work while Jon S is still in the area and able to assist.

Our Stamford Hospital contact (to pursue mounting our repeater on the new tower) is still unresponsive.


Programs
--------

December: Station grounding, presented by Jon P.

January: Remote control drones. Andy will put up a note at his company seeking anyone who might want to speak about and/or demonstrate drones.


Field Day
---------

Terry analyzed our score this year against historical scores. All agreed that this was pretty much our best year ever.

A few years ago I built a 2 meter Yagi. It's the "7dB for $7" version (mine
cost about $20 to build due to inflation). It's pvc and cooper with a 6'+
tail (PL259).  Tuned to the SARA repeater, but you can adjust the driver to
your liking.

I'm cleaning the attic and it's free to a good home. You need to let me
know by Tuesday if you want it and  you must pick it up before Thursday.
