Message-ID: <32938674.1404229919559.JavaMail.root@mswamui-bichon.atl.sa.earthlink.net> Hi Guys, Recently I uncovered plans for a dipole antenna made of two " Slinky " toys. It looks perfect for my QTH, but I have misgivings because I have not heard any thing about this antenna in any contemporary times. ( The article is ca 1972 aprox ). Does anybody know if this design fellinto disuse because of any problems that emerged since? If not, I could put one up this week. Bill Baldwin, WG1HM. This year's score consisted of CW QSOs 1,041 (2,082 points) Digital QSOs 91 (182 points) Phone QSOs 2,618 (2,618 points) CW and digital QSOs each count 2 points, phone QSOs each count 1 point Total points = 4,882 Since all stations operated at under 150 watts, we get to double our operating points to 9,764. We also earned 1,570 bonus points for things like using emergency power, media publicity, the ARRL Field Day message, visits by politicians and served agencies, GOTA bonus for GOTA operators who did more than 20 QSOs each, etc., etc. Phone ---------- In 3A HF phone (i.e., not including GOTA) it appears that we doubled our production of QSOs from last year. That's misleading because last year we had only 1 full-time phone station on the air (what would have been our second station was doing digital for all but a few hours on Saturday). This year we went back to having 2 full-time phone stations on the air (with our second station doing digital for a few hours during the overnight). Having said that, obviously everyone performed great. Adam and Gus were the champs, but we also had very strong showings from Jon Solomon, Terry Papazidis, Chris Demisch, Jon Shapiro, Steve Urso, Tom Agaston, Steve Urso, Terry Martin, Tom Young, and our real ringer - Kathi Laug (238 QSOs). GOTA production was way down - only 132 QSOs versus 331 last year, 355 the year before, and 441 the year before that. While we had a number of visitors, not many wanted to get on the air. In addition, a lot of people who were GOTA eligible last year (e.g., Elena, Steve) are now licensed hams who are no longer GOTA eligible. Similarly, the number of youth operators was way down - we only had five versus as many as 12 in previous years. We do have to work on this area for next year. Having said that, I would like to thank Elena and the others who worked the GOTA tent - they made the visitors feel very comfortable. VHF production was terrible this year (30 QSOs versus 102 last year) - simply due to poor propagation. All we worked were local stations in CT, NY, and NJ. The other stations that we could hear were having the same problem, implying that our antennas were working and that it truly was just propagation at fault. CW ----- 1,041 QSOs versus 716 QSOs. Andy and Wes were incredible. This year's effort was dedicated to the memory of Leonid (AA1LD), a long-time member and CW tent operator who died last year, and they did a wonderful job in his memory. Digital ---------- 81 QSOs versus 204 QSOs. Given our lack of results last year, we scaled it back this year and only ran digital for about 5 hours during the overnight (plus about 1/2 hour right at the end). Visitors ----------- We did not get as many visitors as in previous years (only about 65 versus about 80 for last year). A lot of the missing were old members of SARA who have moved away. We did get a number of new, younger visitors (mostly families) who have not visited before, and that's promising. It would have been nicer if some of those newcomers had been interested in getting on the air, but at least they came and most of them stayed to chat and find out more about the hobby. I think we'll see most of them back next year and maybe even a few at our VE sessions. ************** We had a good Field Day. The weather cooperated. The people cooperated. Setup and takedown went quickly and smoothly. Everyone got on the air who wanted to get on the air. Georgi did another great training effort on Sunday morning. Ernest and Steve did a great job on the food (plus, of course, those who brought food). On behalf of the Board, I thank you all. 73s P.S. Oh yeah, did I remember to mention Terry M. He didn't do much - except organize the whole thing and set us up for an incredible score that will be hard for us to beat!!!! Many hams across the country live in new development which are governed by CC&Rs. CC&Rs are Codes, Covenants, and Restrictions and they are killers for ham radio. Most CC&Rs prohibit the installation of ham antennas and as you all are aware, you can't operate HF without a good antenna. The FCC determined that states, counties, and cities can't prohibit the erection of antennas but did not carry their edict to cover CC&Rs, leaving that change for guidance from the U.S. Congress. There is currently a bill in the House of Representatives to allow a reasonable accommodation for a ham antenna for someone who is governed by CC&Rs. We all know someone who is affected by the restrictions but now we can do something to help. There is a petition at change.org that requests that the House pass the bill and we need every ham in the country to sign it. Put differently- if I'm a representative from Connecticut, I'm not terribly interested in something Texans care about unless Connecticut residents also care about it. And neither me nor my staff will have time to sort through the list of signatures to see if any are from CT. So if the bill isn't on my legislative agenda and I can't trade a vote with someone else over it, I will probably ignore it. So if you care about this issue, sign the petition sure. But more importantly, contact your congressperson directly. You can find their info using this site: http://www.contactingthecongress.org/ Note that as a House bill, you most want to contact (write or call) your Representative, who has the most direct access to this bill. Most people who care about an issue will never speak up about it. So for everyone who signs an online petition, X people must care, for everyone who writes in, Y people must care, and if someone actually calls on the phone, they must be really pissed off so a whole LOT of people must care about it. Point is- writing or calling have much more effect. When making such contacts, shorter is better. You don't need to make a large argument, just get your voice counted. Simply explain that you're an FCC-licensed ham radio operator, and in times of emergency like Hurricane Katrina, ham radio provides essential communications, which requires antennas. This bill would help ensure the ability of hams to have their antennas, and you therefore fully support the bill and encourage the Representative to co-sponsor the bill and vote in favor of it. That's it. Skip the long speech about the evils of CC&Rs, or how heroic ham radio operators make a habit of rescuing starving disabled orphan puppies, or how you made lots of QSOs on Field Day. They don't care. What matters is 1. Why the bill matters to you, 2. That you support it, 3. That's it. If you write, expect a fairly generic reply. The reply is irrelevant, the important thing is whichever intern opened your letter marked off that bill in the computer as 'a constituent wrote in in support'. Hope some of you find that useful. 73, Chris KB1QXR ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: *Jack Roland* Date: Wednesday, July 2, 2014 Subject: Cool: Ham Radio Antenna Bill: To: Jack Roland Greetings all, here is something we can all help with! How do plan on protecting your portable generator durning a storm? Generators must be kept out of the rain so how can you protect the generator and still be able to take a hot shower. I have done some research and found the following. You can built a shelter out of a storage shed and add fans and such, you can build one out of wood or metal, or buy a pre made "tent" for the generator. Let's take the storage shed one first. You need to keep a min of five feet around the machine for air circulation, I think more since a generator is a air cooled engine that is the only way it gets cooled and will last. You also need to be mindfully of the exhaust. The exhaust pipe/manifold gets extremely hot and produces carbon monoxide the silent killer. Hence the fans. You can buy a kit to add fans to a shelter. Some people build the shelter out of wood but the before mentioned items still come into play. The there is the gen tent made by gen tent for about 200.00 it mounts to the generators frame and has fiberglass rods which arch over the machine and a fabric cover goes over the rods. This was going to be what I was going to buy if this last ideal didn't work. I found this simple low cost idea on line. You go to Lowe's and buy a large plastic mixing tray/ pond liner for 14.00 and get some bungee cords. Invert the tub and bungee it to the frame. Allows air movement and keeps the rain off. This works on my Generac gp6500e generator. Oh and I found the low cost trays can be used for many other uses. Hope this helpful to someone. I have the smaller Honda EU2000i, and I use a similar improvised method. I take my big, wheeled plastic recycling bin, empty it, and tip it on its side, with the hinged lid opening sideways. I put the generator into this, exhaust side facing out. I push the generator in far enough so that the falling rain or snow won't touch it. I tie the lid all the way open to provide air and let out exhaust. You can also do this with a large square or rectangular garbage can. During hurricanes, I lash the axle of the bin to the railing of my deck to prevent the bin from blowing away. Steve Urso wrote: > Thought all could benefit from my research. The idea is to get out of the house, to a location you do not normally operate in and make contact with the net. It should be pretty easy, but it will be a fun experiment. Here are the locations we need to cover. If you can cover one of these locations in your town, please reply to me (not reply all). I'd expect you would need to be "on location" from 8 till about 8:45. After that you can grab a coffee with other hams that show up! If you can cover more than one, let me know and I will assign you to one that needs someone. Locations: Stamford: A&P Plaza, High Ridge and Buxton, right off exist 35 on the Merritt. There is a Cosi and Five Guys there if you are hungry. Stamford: McDonalds at 1103 E Main, right off I-95 exit 9. Norwalk: Fire HQ on Connecticut Ave (West parking lot, where GNARC parks for their meetings) Norwalk: Brien McMahan High School, 300 Highland Ave. Wilton: Comstock Community Center on School Road Wilton: Police/Fire HQ, just behind Town hall on Route 7 Fairfield: I need a location here. FF people, please suggest one like a shelter location or nearby. Westport: Same, if you are in Westport, please suggest a relevant location. Stamford folks, you should be prepared to talk on Stamford and Norwalk 2 meter repeaters. Fairfield and Westport, Norwalk is your only choice, 146.475 as usual. Net control will be monitoring Stamford and Norwalk 2 meter repeaters The initial drill is to use a handie talkie only!! Not a mobile rig. Paul WB2JVB p.s. Legal disclaimer!
