Digital Mobile Radio (DMR).



There are several flavors of Digital Radio being used by amateur radio
enthusiasts today, the most popular of which is D-Star.  D-Star is
relatively expensive and is supported only by ICom.



Yaesu recently introduced their own proprietary Digital Radio system which
is also quite expensive and does not seem to be catching on.



?Digital Mobile Radio? or ?DMR? was introduced in Europe in 2005 as ?PMR?
(Professional Mobile Radio).  It was intended to be a stable and
inexpensive professional digital communication system that complies with
the latest and greatest narrow band FCC regulations.  DMR repeaters are
internet (or microwave) linked thus allowing DMR users to talk with other
DMR users anywhere in the world.  Over a dozen radio manufacturers make DMR
radios today and more will be introduced in the near future.  Radio prices
start around $150.00.



Ken Middleton / AG2K, owner of the Bridgeport DMR Repeater, will give a
talk and demo at the Northrop Grumman (Norden) Amateur Radio Club?s ?Radio
Shack? in Westport, CT later this month.  The ?Norden? Amateur Radio Club
is co-located with the Westport Astronomical Society at the Rolnick
Observatory.  Everyone is welcome.

Listen to the talk, watch the demo, ask lots of questions.

Wednesday afternoon...

The National Weather Service in New York has issued a

* Flash Flood Watch for all of southern Connecticut...northeast
 New Jersey and southeast New York...

* from late Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon. 

* As a low pressure system over the Ohio Valley moves into the
 Great Lakes tonight into Tuesday...an onshore flow of deep
 tropical moisture will develop...and showers will gradually
 spread eastward into the region from Tuesday into Tuesday
 evening. This moisture will be wrung out by an upslope flow over
 interior sections...and also by a secondary low developing near
 the area late Tuesday night...and then moving slowly across
 during the day on Wednesday. 

* Showers will likely become heavy at times from late Tuesday
 night into Wednesday morning or early Wednesday afternoon.
 Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely during the
 periods of heaviest rain...and widespread rainfall amounts of 2
 to 3 inches and locally over 4 inches are possible. 

* Rainfall of this intensity and magnitude could cause significant
 urban and poor drainage flooding...that could impact the
 Wednesday morning rush. Flooding of small streams is also
 possible. The heavy rain could also combine with high water
 levels along the coast to exacerbate flooding problems in low
 lying coastal sections.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

351 PM EDT Mon Aug 11 2014

* locations...western Long Island Sound from northwestern 
 Suffolk County to New Haven County.

* Tidal departures...around a half a foot above astronomical 
 tides.

* Timing...tonight...mainly around the time of high tide.

* Impacts...minor coastal flood thresholds will be reached at a 
 few of the lowest lying locations along the shores of western 
 Long Island Sound. This will result in minor inundation of 
 only these most vulnerable spots.

* Outlook...more widespread minor coastal flooding is likely
 with the Tuesday morning and night high tide cycles...especially
 Tuesday night in combination with on going heavy rainfall.

Some of the GNARC people are going to be operating from Sheffield Island
this weekend.  Some will be doing just day trips and others will be staying
overnight.  They still need some operators.

If anyone is interested in going out to Sheffield Island to operate with

IMPORTANT:  Their insurance for this event covers only GNARC members, so if
you want to go out you have to join GNARC ($35).  It's a good idea for
people to be members of both clubs anyway, but this is a really good excuse
if you have the time to go out there.

The September copy of QST should be in your mailbox shortly.  Please pay special attention to the editorial on Page 9 from Dave Sumner, K1ZZ, regarding The Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2014 (or H.R. 4969) that was recently introduced in the US House of Representatives. 

This legislation offers Amateur Radio the best chance for us to deal
with antenna restrictions in decades.   While PRB-1 has been very
effective in dealing with local, state and federal restrictions for private property, it did not address the needs of the thousands of licensed hams living in property (~25 million housing units nationwide) restricted by CC&Rs (covenants, conditions, and restrictions) that are usually present in condominium and subdivisions.  HR-4969 will open the door to discussions about reasonable accommodation.

Two New England House members have already signed on as co-sponsors, Joe Courtney from Connecticut's 2nd District and Peter Welch,
member-at-large from Vermont.   There are nineteen other House members
in New England that are potential co-sponsors and we should be asking all of them for their support.

Will You Help?

We need two kinds of support in order to get this legislation moving, the first one is for you to take the time to write to your Congressperson and ask for his or her support for HR.4969.  A few dozen letters from constituents really sends a message.

I've stated this before in this forum. While Hoa and CCRs aren't a big deal
in our area, I've personally experienced issues with them almost my entire
life.

This may not affect YOUR ability to put an antenna up, but it might affect
your ability to make qsos.

This is a hobby wide issue and we all need to be concerned.

You can't park on Rock Spring Road! Park on Treat Ave. across from my house. Be careful crossing the street! Their are other side roads just a short walk away with sidewalks all streets have street lights. You can even park at CVS large parking area. 5 -7 min. walk to my house. CVS Hope Street bottom of Rock Spring Rd at light.


This year I have a back yard with grass! More room to set-up tents? I have a deck, porch and kitchen. Steve will bring extra chairs & Table. Ernest has picked up supply's. He will bring 2 folding tables.


We will have plenty of food. If you can bring anything please let me know. 


I will be monitoring the SARA repeater. 146.655.

There will be no net tonight, 8/19/2014.

 

Next week, on 8/26, we will attempt to do some "NVIS" 80 meters. We will
call the net on 146.475 as usual, and then look for an open frequency on 80
meters and move over there if possible. Those who do not have 80 meters, we
will relay what is going on over the normal net 2m frequency as best as we
can!

Doug WA1SFH is recruiting hams to participate in a Boy Scout "Jamboree On
The Air" thing on OCTOBER 18.

You don't have to go up to Union CT to participate (up in the northeast
corner of the state near Sturbridge MA).  He needs people to operate from
their home locations to conduct QSOs with the hams up there.

I don't know that we'll be talking about it for years, but it might be
interesting to see how it goes.

radio ops please.

Bike4Bikes is put on by Northeast Community Cycles, a 501(c)3
dedicated to promoting
bicycling as a safe, fun, healthy form of exercise and an alternative means
of transportation for both children and adults.  To date, they have donated
well over 2000 bicycles to deserving adults and kids.

B4B is pretty much the same routes as the Bloomin Metric and will run from
about 7am until about 1pm.  Although technically not a Sound Cyclists
event, most of the people who run the B4B event are the same people who run

Last year we had eleven people from SARA and GNARC working this event.

Digital Mobile Radio (DMR).



There are several flavors of Digital Radio being used by amateur radio
enthusiasts today, the most popular of which is D-Star.  D-Star is
relatively expensive and is supported only by ICom.



Yaesu recently introduced their own proprietary Digital Radio system which
is also quite expensive and does not seem to be catching on.



?Digital Mobile Radio? or ?DMR? was introduced in Europe in 2005 as ?PMR?
(Professional Mobile Radio).  It was intended to be a stable and
inexpensive professional digital communication system that complies with
the latest and greatest narrow band FCC regulations.  DMR repeaters are
internet (or microwave) linked thus allowing DMR users to talk with other
DMR users anywhere in the world.  Over a dozen radio manufacturers make DMR
radios today and more will be introduced in the near future.  Radio prices
start around $150.00.



Ken Middleton / AG2K, owner of the Bridgeport DMR Repeater, will give a
talk and demo at the Northrop Grumman (Norden) Amateur Radio Club?s ?Radio
Shack? in Westport, CT later this month.  The ?Norden? Amateur Radio Club
is co-located with the Westport Astronomical Society at the Rolnick
Observatory.  Everyone is welcome.

Listen to the talk, watch the demo, ask lots of questions.

September  at the Fairfield Fire Training Center:


Join us at 7:30pm on Wednesday, September 3rd for an illuminating talk
about lightning with our own Jeff, W9NIZ.  Jeff will present a computer
generated animation of a tower strike using advanced software that produces
a time domain animation showing voltage potentials and the lightning path
through the tower into the ground field.  Jeff will discuss related topics
such as avoiding common grounding pitfalls, reducing static buildup in the
antenna system and designing a fully grounded system.  Products and
techniques ranging from using a simple balun, using exothermic welding vs.
clamps on the tower and inline surge protected coax will also be discussed.



Following the formal presentation, there will be a question and answer
period with Jeff and Joel Hallas, W1ZR, on hand to focus on techniques for
reducing the lightning current that gets into the station and dwelling.

I just wanted to take just a quick few lineS to introduce myself to the
club.
My name is Tom Herschlein and my call KD7DAW. I have spoken to a few of you
thru the WB1GRB-L Link on echolink. John has done such a supurb job with the
Echolink connection. I have forgotten the simplex frequency he operates his
link on
but i'm sure most of you know it. I look forward to speaking with you
whenever you
are on John's link. I am originally from Long Island right across the sound
over in Bayville.
I have been an amatuer for over 20 years and have been across the country
several times
including a 2 year stay in the Pacific NW in Okanogan Washington where I
got the 7 call.
At the time I thought I was going to stay there forever. NOT!!  Since then
I have lived
in New Hampshire, my favorite, back on Long Island and now fot the last 10
years
in Florida, 'not my favorite'. I am very glad we have Echolink and as a
matter of fact I was a pioneer
of running echolink mobile from my service van back in 2007 thru 2011 using
my laptop
and an air card, long before Echolink was on I-pods and I phones.
I kind of dazzled some of the folks at LIMARC on the 85 machine when I
became part of the commuter chat group there.
Not many people were doing what I was doing and it became a topic of
interest.
Laptop with air card and a mobile aircard antenna. It was so much fun.
Again I am happy to be on the air up in Stamford thru the WB1GRB link

FAIRFIELD COUNTY IN SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT...



* UNTIL 545 PM EDT * AT 452 PM EDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM. THE STORM WAS NEAR MOUNT KISCO...MOVING EAST AT 25 MPH. THIS STORM IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH. * LOCATIONS IMPACTED INCLUDE... RIDGEFIELD... GEORGETOWN... THIS SEVERE THUNDERSTORM HAS A HISTORY OF PRODUCING WIND DAMAGE IN PALISADES IN ROCKLAND COUNTY. DO NOT 



STAY OUTDOORS. VERY HEAVY RAIN WILL ALSO OCCUR WITH THIS SEVERE THUNDERSTORM...WHICH COULD FLOOD LOW LYING AREAS QUICKLY AND COVER ROADS WITH WATER.
