Trees, wires brought down in Stamford

A tree blew down on Gray Farms Road about 150 yards in from Newfield Avenue Monday.

Monday’s wild weather blew a tree down about 150 yards east of the Newfield Avenue intersection with Gray Farms Road just after 3 p.m. Firefighters on the scene said a live power line arcing on the road caught the asphalt on fire. They said flames got to be four to five feet high. It is not known how many residents are without power as a result of the downed wires.

As of 4pm Monday, CL&Preported that just 23 customers had lost power in Stamford. But other towns in the state weren’t faring so well. More than a quarter of Washington’s customers were in the dark, and more than 10 percent of Bethany customers had no power.

The National Weather Servicehad issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Fairfield county until 4:30pm, with gusts as high as 70mph possible. A tornado watch was in effect as well, until 5pm, and a severe thunerstorm watch was in effect until 10pm Monday.

A Belltown firefighter standing next to where a downed power wire burned a hole in the road. Connecticut Light & Power cut electricity to the line.

Better to be prepared then sorry.
