Amateur Radio in Fairfield County has been asked to provide communications
for two charity bicycle rides in September.

1. The Cystic Fibrosis Cycle For Life on Sunday Sept 8. We've done this
event for the past 2 or 3 years. The ride starts from the Westport train
station and has a 30 mile route that goes up into the Lyons Plain area and
a 50 mile route that goes all the way up to Bethel. In the past, this has
been an October ride, but they've changed it to early September. The
organizers have said that they were able to double the number of riders
thanks to our participation, and that our handling of the event has become
a model for similar Cycle for Life events in other places.

2. The Northeast Community Cycles Bikes4Bikes "Fall Foliage" Ride on
Saturday September 28. This is a new event from a relatively new charity
that raises money to donate bicycles to kids and adults. They also do a
number of bike safety programs and programs to get bicycle helmets for all
kids (who ride). The event is going to go from Sherwood Island State Park
and will cover similar routes as the Bloomin Metric, including a 20 mile
route, a 75 kilometer (42 mile) route, and a 100 kilometer (62 mile) route
up through Redding and Easton. This is not the Bloomin and it's not being
put on by Sound Cyclists, but they're going to be using much of the same
routing.

The organization is headed by a teacher in the Stamford Public Schools (and
her husband). They're expecting 300-400 riders, but early sign-up levels
are making them think that they may get as many as 1000 riders - so the
number of vehicles is still up in the air. Their permits limit them to
1000 riders, so they won't be going over that number.

*****

Both are morning events. We'll be starting about 7 or 8 am and the events
will start riding about 8 or 9am. The CF ride was over about noon. I
expect that the Bikes4Bikes may go until about 1pm.

Please consider helping out at these two events. Amateur Radio has gotten
superb coverage from the Cystic Fibrosis people, including being mentioned
prominently in both state and national Cystic Fibrosis newsletters. The
Bikes4Bikes people have already promised that they'll put our club logos on
their tee-shirts and they're expecting some pretty good press coverage.

Please contact me if you would like to volunteer and/or if you have any
questions.
