*Subject:* Frontier Weather: Tropical Update - Sandy stronger

Reports from reconnaissance aircraft indicate that Hurricane Sandy is
stronger and now has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph. Not much
additional change in strength is anticipated. Sandy will be leaving the
Gulf Stream behind, but strengthening in a non-tropical fashion is expected
in the time Sandy has remaining before landfall. The end result will be a
large and powerful storm capable of producing hurricane force winds from
Virginia to the southern shore of Cape Cod. Winds of at least tropical
storm force are expected all across the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and New
England, and even extending back toward the Great Lakes where gale and
storm warnings are in effect for the lakes themselves, and lakeshore flood
warnings for the southern shores. Tropical storm force winds are already
occurring from North Carolina to Long Island and hurricane force winds are
expected to begin this evening from the Mid-Atlantic to Long Island,
including New York City. Water levels have been rising along the
Mid-Atlantic and Northeast coasts since Sunday evening and are currently
elevated by about 3-4 feet in most areas. Sandy has made the turn and is
now moving toward the northwest and the center is expected to make landfall
tonight in Delaware or southern New Jersey. The highest storm surge and
most severe coastal flooding is anticipated to the north of where the
center makes landfall and a surge of 6-11 feet is expected for New York
Harbor and Long Island Sound.
