HARTFORD, CT (WFSB/AP) -
Gov. Dannel Malloy announced Thursday morning that he has partially
activated the state's Emergency Operations Center to monitor a potentially
hazardous cloud of smoke that developed after a fire in New York State.
The fire, at TCI of New York, broke out Wednesday night in a small
industrial park 25 miles south of Albany, triggering explosions and a
fireball rising hundreds of feet into the air, according to witnesses.
"After assessing this potential threat with emergency management and public
health officials, I have directed a partial activation of the EOC today,"
Malloy said. "This will allow us to monitor current conditions and advise
the public quickly if protective actions are needed. We continue to
coordinate with New York and Massachusetts and will keep the media updated
on any developments."
Clouds of black smoke continued rising Thursday as firefighter's sprayed
foam over the fire, which was being fueled by sodium, diesel, propane and
mineral oil.
The EOC will be staffed by the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland
Security, Division of the State Police, Department of Public Health,
Department of Transportation, Military Department, Department of Energy and
Environmental Protection and State Fire Coordination.
