Apparently, there is an effort underway here in southwestern CT to teach the
basics of social media for use in emergencies to "older citizens". For
example, how to use text messaging if you can't get through on a cell phone
voice call. They're looking for a few good trainers -- and preferably
people who are 55 or even better 60+ in age so that the "older citizens"
feel more comfortable (there's a lot of research to the effect that people
60 and above don't feel comfortable and don't learn when taught this stuff
by people in their 20s and 30s).
Use of social media for emergency communications seems to me to be
"communications" and something that a communications-oriented association
(say something like an Amateur Radio association) might undertake as
trainers. Admittedly it's not ham radio per se, but it would be good
publicity for us as well as an opportunity to attract new hams or lapsed
hams. I should note that as a result of just the first CERT organizing
meeting, there are three lapsed hams who are now studying to get their
licenses again. There are probably a lot more out there.
The potential subject matters include:
. Use of text messaging
. Use of Twitter
. Use of Facebook
. Care and feeding of your cell phone, especially in an emergency
Probably others.
Anybody out there think that they would be interested in teaching a course,
especially if you're a bit older and have been using the social media?
