We didn't get penalized for going over but we were allowed to count only
the first 500 QSO's.
That is, there's a 500-QSO limit for the GOTA station. We made 611
QSO's, which is a testament to how much fun everybody was having at the
GOTA station. There was a lot of excitement and enthusiasm in the tent
and we just kept cranking out the QSO's.
If we had had the flexibility to select the 500 we were going to count
out of the 611 we made, our score would have been higher. The rules are
a little ambiguous on this point, so we asked the ARRL for a
clarification and made a very strong argument why it would be within the
rules and in the best interests of amateur radio and Field Day to allow
us to do so. But the ARRL said, no, we can count only the first 500
QSO's. So that's what we did.
But, again, spectacular job making all the QSO's we did. It's the first
time (that anyone involved was aware of) that the SARA GOTA station
maxed out on QSO's -- not just maxed out, but blew the doors off the
barn, so to speak.
