The good news first: Unlike some of the crippling storms that pelted Southwestern Connecticut earlier this season, the snow that piled on the region overnight should be all but done falling by the time the morning commute is fully under way.

But roads this morning are slippery everywhere and impassable in some areas after yet another storm in what is already the snowiest January in history.

Up to 17 inches of snow is on the ground throughout Southwestern Connecticut. The National Weather Service reports 17 inches of snow in Norwalk; 15 inches in Milford; 14.5 inches in New Canaan; 13 inches in Danbury; 13 inches in Shelton; and 12.5 in Darien. There has already been a state record amount of snowfall this month, with 47.8 inches of snow, topping the previous record of 45.3 inches set in 1945.

Snow emergencies are in effect in several cities, including Stamford, Norwalk and Bridgeport.
If you are not driving an SUV or a larger vehicle, you will likely get stuck on side roads.
DOT officials are asking for help to allow them to get out and clear the streets.

The DOT has issued a truck ban until 10 a.m. this morning.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, whose first month in office has been one of the snowiest in history, has told all non-essential state employees to stay home until noon, delaying state office openings. He is also asking other workers in private companies to do the same if possible.

Appearing on WTNH-TV's Good Morning Connecticut, Malloy said he was astonished by the amount of snow throughout the state.

"If you ever wanted to know what it's like to live in Buffalo, New York, you're experiencing it right now," he quipped.

There have been many major incidents, including a tree down on the Merritt Parkway southbound and tractor-trailers stranded all over Interstate 95 blocking traffic.

Service on the Metro-North New Haven line is suspended because of snow removal.

Bradley International Airport remains open, but most flights in and out of the airport have been delayed or canceled. Airport officials are asking passengers to call their airlines before coming to the airport. More than 600 flights are canceled in the New York and New Jersey airports, which also remain open, but most flights are not arriving or departing.
