[CTSARA] UPDATE SARA New Repeater Site

Hello again,
I don't know if I'd qualify as a 'good' operator, to be a good operator
requires operating to begin with :) But I do intend to try and be more
active, my poor VX-7 has sat unused in my car for far too long. Now to
go see if it's still charged...
I've read a handful of the documents about designing repeater systems,
modified Motorola gear with an outboard controller seems to be a popular
setup.
I'm an IT consultant by trade, part of what I do involves setting up
servers and networks to be fault-tolerant and have backup power supplies
etc. I've always found such setups (infrastructure and its backup
arrangements, and the different ways these get implemented by different
system designers) to be quite interesting, partially because I often
work with such things in my job.
I'm curious to hear more about this "new site which will be unlike any
other club repeater site in Connecticut" (quoth john wb1grb)... it
sounds like a fascinating project...
Until next time,
Chris KB1QXR

Ok Chris,
If I answer your questions I expect that you will become more active in
our group. We need good radio operators.
Both machines are of the Motorola type they have been modified to the
amateur bands to which they will operate.? We did add a controller and a
way to generate PL tones etc.. I am not an expert and was in the
position of apprenticing to Curt Seaton, W1FSM who really helped out the
SARA group put this project online to the point now it is up at Sterling
Farm a restricted back-up Radio site for the city of Stamford.?
You might want to visit the www.repeater-builder.com site for further
information in how to adopt these type of radios over to amateur radio
use.

Hi Chris: yes you are a member of the SARA Mailing List.
Some of your questions might be a little sensitive.
Since I am not directly working on the project but have been following
this for three and one half years it would be more appropriate to ask
Frank, KB1iFX which has been working very hard on this new repeater site
or Fred, K1FOC.
Tuesday we will be discussing a possible SARA picnic like we had last
year and using up the Field Day leftovers. This would also be a good
time to discuss this new site which will be unlike any other club
repeater site in Connecticut which will be also set up for emergency
communications.
This new site is a very big responsibility for SARA to provide emergency
communication for the city of Stamford. We will need volunteers to
participate and practice in drills.
Amateur Radio is the vital first communications link in times of
disaster. We need to demonstrated our willingness to assist, volunteer,
and help out with Worldwide Emergency Communications skills in time of
emergencies.
