Tropical Wave Will Become Danny Later Today
UPDATED 8:30 AM EDT, August 26, 2009
UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, James West
A tropical wave north of Puerto Rico is looking much better organized this morning and will likely become Tropical Storm Danny by midday. East Coast residents will need to watch this system closely; it could take a track like Bill did a week ago, moving very close to Cape Hatteras, Long Island and Cape Cod over the upcoming weekend.
This system has been sputtering over the last several days north of Puerto Rico as upper-level winds shear apart thunderstorms and prevent the development of a central circulation. These conditions have changed this morning; with lower shear allowing the system to become better organized and the first visible satellite images of the day indicate a small circulation area.
Current forecast models have this system moving to the northwest, eventually curving over the Gulf Stream and accelerating northeast, away from the East Coast as a weak cold front across the Southeast steers it away. The entire East Coast from central Florida to Maine will still need to keep an eye on this systems development and track, especially if the stalling front influence wanes. Just like Bill last week, this system, even if it stays offshore, will produce a weekend full of rip currents, dangerous high surf and gusty winds from Myrtle Beach to Maine.
In the tropical Pacific, Tropical Storm Ignacio is likely to begin a slow weakening trend to a tropical depression. This morning, the storm is about 815 miles west of the southern tip of Baja, Calif., moving northwest at 14 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 50 mph and Ignacio is likely to lose punch as it reaches cooler waters. It is not a threat to land.
