[CTSARA] Recommendations For Antenna Projects

Does anyone good VHF\UHF atenna projects for a beginner?  At the moment, I 
use my VX-7 with a discone in the attic, which I use to hit the SARA 
repeater and the WB2CIK NY packet node, and a small mag mount antenna for 
the car.  With all the past satellite activity,  I want to look more into 
small directional antennas, maybe something handheld or something that can 
be attached to an old camera tripod.

Also, what's so special about J-pole antennas?
