WD-40 has not been a consistent product over time. Probably most of the
changes have been in the propellant, but soem versions make good engine
starter (propane for propellant vs freon or carbon dioxide). As a
penetrating oil there are many brands that make it look like water
(though its original purpose was to remove water from aircraft engine
ignition systems, Water Displacer formula number 40). I've not found it
to be a persistent lubricant either, for me its more like a very
temporary lubricant and so I'd not expect it to work for a long time as
a knob or panel polish. Kroil is very good at penetrating, and according
to Home Shop Machinist a couple years ago a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone
works better on rusty iron and steel than any commercial product
including Kroil. Its hard to contain because of the acetone that eats
most plastics. And that can also make it hard on paints that aren't
baked epoxy.
