This could explain the reports of a wide range in performance among NIB
6DC6's from RCA.

In the RCA Production records in the TCA cache, I am sure I have seen
places where the notation was "the warehouse" was supposed to change the
etch.

Seems the tubes were made at the tube plant and shipped in Bulk to the
warehosue where the marking was done and the tubes were packaged either
as RCA boxed stock, or Private label...

What Type number is the tube (now)? perhaps we can look it up.

May also be a "specially selected" tube, if it has one of the 1600
series numbers. OR it could be an error that was corrected.

(I have a nice RCA 6GH8A, (according to the box and the nice sharp red
printing on the tube) which is actually a Mullard ECC83, which
apparently got in the wrong batch of tubes on the labelling and packing
line)

The 6DC6 is a good example: if an order for a small number of tubes came
in - not enough to schedule a "production unit" to make a run of 50,000 or
so tubes - the warehouse took 6CB6s out of stock, gave them the special test
(of cutoff "knee" voltage) to qualify them as 6DC6s, buffed-off the 6CB6
"etch," re-etched them, and out they went.
