Well I guess it depends on your definition of synthesized. The PTO accuracy and precision are both derived form one crystal controlled reference oscillator. Irving Gottlieb's book "Practical Oscillator Handbook" says that the PLL as well as the regenerative modulator are both called a "synthesized oscillator" in the technical literature. This was published in 1997 so it was not all that long ago.
So what is your opinion on the ARC-58? Easy to maintain or a PITA? How reliable were they in aircraft? Were they installed in the crew cabin or in unpressurized areas of the aircraft?
I have worked on the KWT-6 when I was in the Air Force and lately some of the KWT-6 family of radios using many of the same modules as the ARC-58 except that the tuning is manual instead of automatic. I have a 310F-6 receiver-exciter up and running; its a fun radio. Once the PTO and Interpolation Oscillator are synchronized and on frequency, it seems to quite work well.
Jim

I used to work on ARC-58's...there was nothing synthesized about them.
it was a phased locked PTO setup.
