The only equipment I remember seeing them used on was the ARC-27 transistorized guard receiver.  What I found on the internet indicates that they were developed in the 1960s and are second in development after the SMA.  Since they are a push-on mating connector, they do not seem to hold up well to high vibration levels.

Subject: [Collins] Collins HF-380

Hello All

I was looking thru my HF-380 service manual and I noticed that some models
used smb connectors
on various boards like the A5 synthesizer and the A8 control and high
stability oscillator.
My question, just how common were they?

73's Lee.
