Recently I bought a vintage finishing book. It has a page on wrinkle
finish."The Complete Book of Wood Finishing," by Robert Scharff,
copyright 1955, pages 204 and 205. It says:

"Wrinkle Finishes

"Wrinkling lacquer is used on a wide variety of products in both wood
and metal. It can be obtained in all colors, in a range of patterns from
coarse to fine wrinkles, for air drying or baking. It is variouly known
as fingerprint, shrivel, ripple, etc. Because of its rough texture,
wrinkle is a one-coat finish since the surface to which its applied need
not be smooth. The material is heavier than ordinary lacquers and can be
brushed on quite satisfactorily. If a spray gun is used it should be
applied by pressure feed. Thin slightly with naphtha if required. The
heavier the coat, the coarser the wrinkle; very thin coats will not
wrinkle at all. Heat is necessary for the wrinkles to form, and even
with the air-dry wrinkling lacquer, exposure before a gas or electric
heater will give a quicker and more uniform pattern. Small objects can
easily be baked in an ordinary kitchen oven. Air-dry the piece for about
half an hour to permit partial evaporation of the solvent. Then bake at
a temperature of about 180 degrees for about 1 hour or until the
wrinkles are well formed. Increase the heat to 250 degrees for about 2
hours to harden the finish coat. No top coat is necessary. However, if a
colored finish other than the wrinkle color is required, apply any color
of lacquer enamel. The finish coat can be smutted or a shaded effect can
be obtained by spraying a contrasting color enamel with the gun held
close to and parallel with the work surface. This deposits the enamel on
only one side of the wrinkles and gives a novel two-tone surface."
