Byron I've sent you an e-mail with the photos. The
list will strip them from this message.
Attached to this e-mail are photos of my slug rack
during service, after 50 years since new. Notice
the red string tied to the spring clips. I do this
because they can vanish when being removed or
installed. There is an inner shaft and outer tube
and ball bearings between the two. Once everything
is disassembled it's obvious how it works. I
suspect the shaft has been pushed into the tube in
your case.
The beryllium strips, as well as the rollers they
run on, can be cleaned without disassembly of the
rack. Just be careful, the strips are delicate and
hard to replace. Be mindful that there is a single
ball bearing in the rear tensioner assembly. It is
just waiting to run off and hide.
Once your have cleaned and reassembled the rack
you will need to do the alignment procedure.
Follow the manual to the letter.
