Actually, I think you can find something very close to the original idea. Check Kellems '"pulling grips". They are available in wire mesh and fiber mesh varieties, many sizes. I believe these Chinese finger puzzle gadgets are made by other manufacturer's as well. I used to use them for pulling coax into telemetry receiving sites. 

The down side will probably be cost or availability unless you are good buddies with an industrial electrician or a cable system pole monkey.
