That's what I was going to suggest. Its been a problem with mobile mics 
for all my ham history (going on 55 years).

Look for Heil Wire, available at http://www.cheapham.com/page4.html for 
a buck a foot. Might be found at most ham stores carrying Heil products, 
I expect.

In the mean time, just cut off about and inch shorter than the shells or 
outer ends of the bend relief springs and reconnect.
