Frank,

Boy, microphone choice is a tough one. Without an external pre-amp, yes, you will need a high impedance, A.K.A., "hi-Z" dynamic or crystal microphone. I suspect that a very high percentage of 32S-3 installations will be covered if I mention the following desktop mics: Collins SM-1, Collins SM-2, Astatic D-104, Shure 444, Electro-voice 664. There are many more.

Shure still makes new hi-Z mics. I use the Shure 522 with my 32S-3s. The Shure 450 Series II is nearly identical to the obsolete 444 in all respects.

Or, if you have modern low_Z mics on hand, you can purchase a lo-to-hi Z in-line transformer from one of the mic manufacturers or use one of the many available external preamplifier/equalizer gadgets to boost the level, tailor frequency response, and convert from the low-
Z balanced signal to the unbalanced circuit configuration required for the 32S-3.

The 32S-3 audio circuits and IF filters were designed for SSB communications application, not "broadcast" or "hi-fi" sound. The flat response and wide frequency response of expensive studio grade mics will be wasted. Matching your voice characteristics to the mic and transmitter audio response can be a challenge. Good luck , and enjoy your 32S-3
