[Collins] 51J series input coil antenna requirements.

I have both a 51J-2 and an R-388. The 51J-2
sensitivity is definitely improved with the use of a
TV balun when used with an antenna that is fed with 50
ohm coaxial cable. Such indicates that the antenna
input is for higher impedance balanced feed. The
R-388 works fine with antennas fed with 50 ohm coaxial
cable.

For the article on using TV baluns that was in
Electric Radio a while back go to

and scroll down to the "Articles" heading. The
article on the TV baluns is the 16th down from the
top.

There is an archived letter from me that lists the
differences between the 51J(j-2), the j-3(r388) and
j-4. There are differences in the antenna circuit
between the j/j-2 and the j-3/j-4 but not between the
j-3 and j-4. As Jerry points out, the J-4 is a
modified J-3 - mechanical filter module.
