Frank,
    6U8's are very prone to grid to cathode shorts.  In fact, many times 
the short will not show up on a tester so replacing the tube will be the 
only sure way to find the culprit.  It is my understanding that the 
6EA8's are not prone to this fault.  Oh, and the only place where the 
6EA8 doesn't work well is in the audio oscillator circuit in the KWM-2 
and 32S-1.  In this instance you are stuck using the 6U8.
